MISSION AND HISTORY
The Temple of Understanding (ToU) is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit and a NGO with Consultative Status at the United Nations.
Its mission is to achieve peaceful coexistence among individuals, communities, and societies through cross-cultural and inter-religious education and advocacy. For the past ten years, our principal activities have been: 1) Advocacy at the United Nations for the inclusion of diverse perspectives in the advancement of the UN’s mission, 2) In-school and after school cross cultural and global leadership skills development programs for youth, 3) Cross cultural educational programs for adults.
JULIET HOLLISTER AWARDS
In 1996, in support and affirmation of individuals whose life work has advanced the interfaith vision, the Temple of Understanding established the Juliet Hollister Award. The Hollister Award is granted to individuals who are: members of a religious order who bring interfaith values into the place of worship where the faithful congregate; and secular individuals who promote greater understanding of spiritual values in areas such as the arts, education, media, government, science, law and ecology.
PROGRAMS
ToU programs address the new challenges of an interconnected, global society, by advancing an innovative model of interfaith education. Our programs utilize the rich diversity within the New York City tri-state community to educate and create awareness of cross-cultural and religious issues, traditions and perspectives, as well as advance the conversation among representatives of different disciplines.
Using an experiential approach, ToU’s work goes beyond a static “lecture hall” model to include site visits, service learning, and immersion experiences in many traditions and cultures. ToU’s programs integrate religious literacy with cross-cultural understanding, conflict resolution and leadership training.
INTERNATIONAL CHAPTERS IN INDIA
In 1968 The Temple of Understanding held the first Interfaith Spiritual Summit in Calcutta, India. Since then, Dr. Karan Singh has been the International Chairman of eight Chapters in cities all over India. Temple of Understanding Chapters in India are dedicated to interfaith dialogue and education. This group convenes conferences, publishes papers and acts independently, although in partnership with the Temple of Understanding.
