You may wish to own a domain in your WordPress.com account, but not have it associated with a particular website. This is often referred to across the web as “parking” a domain. This guide will walk you through how to detach a domain from your website so that a ‘parking page’ appears instead.

Have a question?
Ask our AI assistantTo detach a registered domain from your WordPress.com website:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Upgrades → Domains.
- Click on the domain you want to detach from your website.
- At the bottom of the right sidebar, click the button labeled “Detach”.
- On the confirmation box, click on the button labeled “Detach”.
A banner will appear, confirming that the domain will be detached from your site in a few minutes.

Visiting the domain will show a parking page instead of the website:

While the domain is disconnected, you can still take the usual actions on your domain, including:
- Add Professional Email.
- Transfer the domain to another WordPress.com account or domain registrar.
- Modify the DNS records.
Visit the All Domains page to access your disconnected domain’s settings.
See the attach a domain guide to learn how to attach the domain to a new or existing site.
If you have a connected domain (i.e., a domain registered with a different provider), there won’t be the “Detach” option as described above. Instead, you can remove the domain with these steps:
- Go to your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Upgrades → Domains.
- Identify the domain you want to remove and click the ⋮ next to it.
- Select “View settings.”
- Click the “Delete” button to remove the domain connection permanently.
Your domain will remain registered with your provider, but will be removed from your WordPress.com account.
