Detach a domain from a site

Last reviewed on October 30, 2025

You may wish to own a domain in your WordPress.com account, but not have it associated with a particular website. This is often referred to across the web as “parking” a domain. This guide will walk you through how to detach a domain from your website so that a ‘parking page’ appears instead.

Remove a domain from a website

To detach a registered domain from your WordPress.com website:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP Admin).
  3. Click on the domain you want to detach from your website.
  4. At the bottom of the right sidebar, click the button labeled “Detach”.
  5. On the confirmation box, click on the button labeled “Detach”.

A banner will appear, confirming that the domain will be detached from your site in a few minutes.

Visiting the domain will show a parking page instead of the website:

While the domain is disconnected, you can still take the usual actions on your domain, including:

Visit the All Domains page to access your disconnected domain’s settings.

Remove a connected domain

If you have a connected domain (i.e., a domain registered with a different provider), there won’t be the “Detach” option as described above. Instead, you can remove the domain with these steps:

  1. Go to your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP Admin).
  3. Identify the domain you want to remove and click the ⋮ next to it.
  4. Select “View settings.”
  5. Click the “Delete” button to remove the domain connection permanently.

Your domain will remain registered with your provider, but will be removed from your WordPress.com account

Attach a domain to a website

To attach a disconnected domain to any website in your WordPress.com account:

  1. Visit your global dashboard at https://wordpress.com/sites.
  2. On the side, select “Domains”.
  3. Click on the domain you want to attach to a website.
  4. From the “Create a WordPress.com site” section at the top, you can attach your domain to one of your existing WordPress.com sites or a new site:
    • Click the button labeled “Add a new site” to create a new site with its own plan subscription to use with the domain.
    • Click the button labeled “Attach to an existing site” to select and link the domain to a site on which you are an administrator.
