About .mx domain names

Last reviewed on June 11, 2026

.mx domain names have special registry requirements for registration, privacy, renewals, and transfers. This guide explains what these requirements mean when you manage a .mx domain name on WordPress.com.

Who can register .mx domain names?

Anyone can register .mx and .com.mx domain names. WordPress.com supports only these two .mx extensions.

Registration restrictions

The “state” value is mandatory in the registrant contact information. If you list MX as the country, a list of valid Mexican states will appear as a drop-down in the registrant contact form.

Privacy protection for .mx domain names

Privacy protection is not supported for .mx domain names.

Renewal restrictions

If the domain name is allowed to expire, you can still renew at the normal price (Renewal Grace Period) for up to approximately 40 days after expiration. After that, the domain name enters the Redemption Grace Period.

Transfers of .mx domain names

Transfers to another registrar require 10 days to process. You can expedite this by confirming the transfer—see completing the transfer.

There is no restriction on transfers during the first 60 days of registration. Similarly, there is no transfer lock applied as a result of a contact information update.
