Your homepage is the first page visitors see when they arrive at your site. In this guide, you will learn how to configure your homepage settings.
How you edit your homepage depends on your theme type. To check your theme type, look for Appearance → Editor in your site’s dashboard. If it exists, you have a Block theme. If you see Appearance → Customize instead, you have a Classic theme.
Block themes include a built-in homepage that you edit through the Site Editor. This homepage does not appear in your Pages list—it is part of your theme’s design. Instead of changing the homepage settings, you can edit the default homepage of a Block theme. If you have a Block theme, you can leave the homepage setting on “Your latest posts”—despite the name, it displays whatever your theme’s homepage template contains, not necessarily blog posts.
Classic themes (and some third-party themes) require you to create a page and assign it as your homepage in Settings → Reading. The homepage appears in your Pages list like any other page. If you have a classic theme, you can set a custom homepage by following the instructions below.
Classic and third-party themes may have you set a specific page as your site’s home page. You can also choose to set a custom home page if you are using a Block theme, although in most cases that is unnecessary.
To set the homepage of your site, follow the steps below:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings → Reading in the sidebar:

- Locate the “Your homepage displays” setting at the top of the screen. You need at least one published page for this setting to appear.

- Choose from the following options:
- Your latest posts: Displays your theme’s default homepage design. Despite the name, this may not show blog posts—it displays whatever your theme’s homepage template contains.
- A static page: Choose a custom homepage you have created, as well as a separate page to display blog posts. Only published pages (not drafts) will show in these dropdown lists.
- Click the “Save Changes” button to save your selected homepage.
To switch back to your theme’s built-in homepage:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings → Reading.
- Select Your latest posts.
- Click “Save Changes“.
There are a few reasons why your homepage may have disappeared. For more information on recovering a homepage check out our troubleshooting guide.
