Subscribe to blogs via Jabber

Last reviewed on December 2, 2025

Jabber (XMPP) is an open instant messaging protocol that delivers new blog posts and comments directly to your Jabber client. In this guide, you will learn how to set up and manage Jabber subscriptions for WordPress.com blogs.

Connect to the Jabber service

To use the Jabber subscription service, you need a WordPress.com account and a Jabber client. Configure your client with these connection details:

  • Jabber ID: username@im.wordpress.com (Replace “username” with your WordPress.com username)
  • Password: Your WordPress.com account password
  • Jabber Server/Host: im.wordpress.com
  • Port: 5222 (standard Jabber port)

💡

If you have two-step authentication enabled, generate an application-specific password for your Jabber client.

Configure subscription delivery

After setting up your Jabber client, configure which blogs deliver updates through Jabber:

  1. Visit your dashboard.
  2. In the top-right corner of the page, hover your mouse over your name or profile picture.
  3. Click the “My WordPress.com account” option to access your account profile.
  4. Select “Notification Settings” on the left side.
  5. Click the Subscription settings tab.
  6. Select which blogs you want delivered through Jabber.

Optionally, you can set Jabber as your default delivery option from your notification settings.

Use the automated bot to manage your subscriptions directly through Jabber. Add bot@im.wordpress.com to your buddy list, then open a chat window and type “howdy” to get started.
