Import subscribers

Last reviewed on December 10, 2025

Use the subscriber importer to quickly import your email subscribers from another platform. This guide will show you how to import a CSV file of your subscribers so that they’ll be notified each time you publish a post on WordPress.com.

Before you import

Please ensure that you have permission to email your subscribers. To protect the deliverability and reputation of our email servers for the benefit of all WordPress.com users, we may permanently disable the subscriber service on your site if we receive spam complaints from your subscribers, if your emails have a high bounce rate, or if imports otherwise violate these guidelines.

Import your subscriber list

To import subscribers, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Jetpack → Subscribers.
  3. Click the “+ Add subscribers” button to choose from:
    • Add subscribers manually: type, or paste, email addresses to add subscribers to your site manually.
    • Use a CSV file: Upload a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file from your computer containing your subscribers.
    • Import from Substack: Bring in your subscribers from the Substack platform.
Three options to add subscribers: manually, with a CSV file, or by importing from Substack.
  1. Click the “Add subscribers” button to add your new subscribers. You can import free or paid subscribers from Substack. You can also choose to import your content from Substack.

Add subscribers to specific categories (optional)

You can import subscribers to specific newsletter categories on your site. If you want to import your subscribers to specific newsletter categories you can follow these steps:

  1. Ensure that you have enabled newsletter categories and have created at least one category.
  2. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  3. Navigate to Jetpack → Subscribers.
  4. Click the “+ Add subscribers” button to choose from:
    • Add subscribers manually: type, or paste, email addresses to add subscribers to your site manually.
    • Use a CSV file: Upload a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file from your computer containing your subscribers.
  5. Toggle the option to add the “subscribers to specific categories“. If you do not see the option to add subscribers, make sure you have enabled newsletter categories and have assigned at least one category.
  6. Type the first few characters of the newsletter category you want to add your subscribers to, and select the matching category. Add as many existing categories as you want.
The "Add these subscribers to specific categories" option toggled to on and a couple of categories added.
  1. Click the “Add subscribers” button to add your new subscribers.

Import limits

In order to prevent spam, the free plan has an import limit of 100 subscribers. Paid plans have no limit, but imports of more than 10,000 subscribers will go through a manual review.

Troubleshooting subscriber imports

Errors during import

If you face any errors importing a CSV file, such as “We ran into a problem importing your subscribers”, here are a few things to verify first:

  • Go through your subscriber email list and make sure that all of them are valid email addresses. If we detect any invalid email addresses, the import will not work.
  • Ensure you have collected all your subscriber email addresses by yourself and have not purchased any subscriber list. We take spam very seriously, and your email list will be blocked if we detect known spam addresses.
  • If you have lots of email addresses, try importing them in smaller batches of 500 each.

Here is a list of other common errors, and what you can do about them:

Subscribers not imported

If you receive an email saying that not all of your subscribers have been imported, here’s why:

  • Some email domains are known spammers or abusers, so we block such domains from receiving email.
  • The email address you tried to add is associated with a WordPress.com user account that has chosen not to receive email (that user can re-enable emails in their notification settings).
  • The email address has too many pending invites for subscriptions.
