Set up account recovery email and SMS

Keep your account safe by adding a backup email address and phone number. If you ever have problems accessing your account, WordPress.com will use what you enter here to verify your identity. In this guide, you will learn how to set up a recovery email and SMS (text message) number.

Set up recovery email and SMS

To add a recovery email and SMS number to your account, take the following steps:

  1. Hover over your name at the top right corner of any screen while logged into WordPress.com.
  2. Select the “My WordPress.com account” button:

  1. On the side, select the Security menu option:

  1. Select the “Account recovery” option:

  1. In the Recovery Email section, enter an alternate email address and click the “Validate” button.
    • You will receive an email with a link to click to verify your access to the email address.
  2. In the Recovery SMS Number section, select your country code from the drop-down, enter your alternate phone number, and click the “Validate” button.
    • You will receive a text message with a code to enter into your WordPress.com account to verify the phone number.

To remove a recovery method later, click “Remove email” or “Remove SMS number” in the corresponding section.
