With real-time collaboration, you and other users on your site can edit the same post or page in the WordPress Editor at the same time and see each other’s changes as you type. This guide covers how to turn real-time collaboration on or off and what to expect while editing together.
This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce plans. For free sites, upgrade your plan to access this feature.
To turn real-time collaboration on or off, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings → Writing in your site’s dashboard.

- Next to Collaboration, check the box next to “Enable real-time collaboration” to enable it, or uncheck the box to disable it.
- Scroll to the bottom and click the “Save Changes” button.

Your changes take effect immediately for all collaborators on your site.
To collaborate in real-time with others, each person must be a user on your site with permission to edit content. Learn how to add users to your site.
Up to three people can edit the same post or page simultaneously. When another user is editing the same post or page as you, you will see:
Avatars at the top of the editor show everyone currently editing. Click on the avatars at the top to see the names of the people collaborating:

Icon cursors in the content area show where each person is working. Hover over the icon to see the name of the person editing:

You can see other users’ changes as they type—you don’t need to save or refresh the page.
💡
Use block notes to leave feedback for collaborators directly in the content.
Your changes and your collaborators’ changes sync live, which reduces conflicts. If two people edit the same block at the same time, the editor applies both changes in the order it receives them. To avoid conflicts when working on the same content:
- Talk with your collaborators about which sections each person is working on.
- Use the avatars and cursors to see where others are editing.
- Avoid editing the same block at the same time as another person.
If a plugin on your site adds custom fields below the editor—called meta boxes—you won’t be able to use real-time collaboration on those posts or pages. The editor will use the standard single-user experience instead.
Real-time collaboration requires the Gutenberg plugin to be active. If you have deactivated it, real-time collaboration is not available until you reactivate the plugin through Plugins → Installed plugins.
