Premium domain names

WordPress.com supports premium domain names. These are special domain names because they are short and memorable and sold for a price higher than a standard domain name.

To view the price of any standard or premium domain name:

1. Visit your WordPress.com dashboard.
2. Navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP Admin.)
3. Click the “Add a domain” button.
4. Search for the domain name you’re interested in.

Premium domain names are valued based on their demand, brand potential, keywords, and length. Premium pricing can vary from slightly higher than the standard price to up to ten, a hundred, or a thousand times more!

The price of a premium domain name is primarily determined by the registry for each TLD/extension (i.e., the characters to the right of the dot like .com or .blog.) Since registrars (that’s us) must pay the registry for each domain name, registrars must factor in the registry’s pricing model to determine how much to charge customers. Domain names can’t be purchased directly from the registry, only through a registrar like WordPress.com.

At a high level, registries assign one of two main pricing models to domain names: standard and premium. The prices of standard domain name TLDs are listed on our Domain Name Pricing page.

The registry also determines the renewal pricing for premium domain names. In some cases, the domain name renews at the same premium price as the initial registration. In other cases, renewals are at a lower standard price. In other cases, renewals are lower than the purchase price but higher than the standard price.

For transparency, we display the renewal price along with the registration price upfront before you purchase a premium domain name:

Once a domain has been purchased, we also show the renewal price in your dashboard.

Premium domain names are subject to the same refund and cancellation policy as our standard-priced domain names. Refunds will only be given if the domain name is fully canceled within 96 hours of the initial purchase (registration) or renewal. Due to the pricing for these domain names, we cannot make exceptions to this policy.

We offer one free year of domain name registration with the purchase of any WordPress.com annual plan. Because premium domain name prices can be much higher than standard pricing, premium domain names are not eligible to be registered, renewed, or transferred using the free domain name offer. They are also exempt from special offers, including coupons and other promotions.
