Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.

OMG! That’s what it is! Pardon me–I’m digitally challenged…and this prompted some mouse-musing post in my blog just now. I don’t even know how I got here, but my simple mind was so boggled with what I thought I have done to change the look of my dashboard. Sure…I was lost for a while, actually it will take awhile before I will get used to it again. Whatever you say –LOL [wink] –WordPress knows best!
It looks like it doesn’t load right… we’ll see if it grows on me!
Quite frankly, this new lay-out is ugly and counter-intuitive. I really hate the new design. I spent the last twenty minutes trying to negotiate it, eventually believed I’d succeeded in uploading an image, only to have the screen freeze on me. Very frustrating. I’ll give it the weekend but I’m afraid if it continues to prove elusive, I’ll be heading back to blogspot.
People who don’t like: lets-a give it a chance, eh? Change is hard, despite what Barack may tell you. Anyway, this being Friday I’m going to go do something besides blog for a bit…
I had been wondering what you guys were up to. Not like you to be quiet for so long. As to the new dashboard–it will take some getting used to, but then, I didn’t exactly love the previous set-up, so will not be grieving.
Things I don’t like:
– that the comments section isn’t as obvious and intuitive as it was yesterday
– the colors (pale blue and tomato red? come on, wordpress friends, you can do better.
– the fact that I can’t see the list of my drafts on the ‘write a post’ page
– the fact that I haven’t found my blogroll yet, and it really should be right up top the way it used to be (where is it?)
Things I like:
– that at least a first-glance view of the stats is available on the dashboard page
– um … surely there must be something else that I like … but I just can’t seem to think of a thing. I appreciate your desire to do some spring cleaning and upgrading, but
doesn’t work. publish – no post. Change layout – no changes saved. What’s going on here???
…but my bad, bad kitteh stepped on the keyboard and managed to hit both ‘tab’ and ‘enter’ so clearly it was time for me to stop kvetching.
Whoaa! amazing…when I started my comment I thought I was the first one. When I finished, I was #41 I guess (41 Responses). Oh, I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one lost. It seems more historic if you were doing your post when the change happened.
very surprise!still very unfamilliar. But I think it should be great.
I’m having trouble adding links with this new version on one of my iMacs — just get a blank box instead of the three fields (url, open, title) inside it. Oddly, my other iMac doesn’t have this problem with the upgrade.
I’m still working on getting used to the new dashboard. I like the fact that I can monitor more stuff from my dashboard directly.
I did want to toss out an idea, that I’m guessing is not practical to implement very soon, but I thought might be useful for the future. Would it be possible to customize where the widgets are on the dashboard, or to hide/show the widgets?
If there’s a way to do that already, I’m sure I’m about to feel silly. 🙂
rkref, that’s a cache issue, which is why it happens on one computer and not another. Try to clear all of the internet caches from your browser.
Oh, found something else I like:
– that I can preview a post without having to save it first
– that there’s just one ‘save’ button because it was sometimes annoying to have two
And I found my blogroll … but it really should be a little more intuitive for not-clever-or-tech-savvy souls such as me.
Anyway, it’s growing on me, so now I really will stop griping. Thanks again for solving my comments-gone-astray problem!
Fantastic, I feel so surprised of my dashboard, it’s looked so different. Cool man !
This is a better design once we get used to it. The only problem is that the “edit” button on each comment isn’t there. Often I used to reply to comment within the comment itself as it saved me from going to a post but now I can’t do that. This is a disadvantage.
Wow. I’m seriously impressed by what WordPress has done this time. It’s fantastic! Keep up the good work! (:
Great Dashboard Design. !! Good Job 🙂
oh, at first I thought the site is down again. 🙂
I like it but maybe need more time to explore.. Its more simple.
Doesn’t quite ‘look’ good. Thanks for the new features though.
Initially …I thought I had a bug on my computer.
But…as with everything on the net…the initial hate is gone…I am very familiar with it already (I think!). it works!
The only thing…I noticed that the “TAG SURFER”…The “T” on the far left of the page is a bit hidden, like a layer is blocking the top of the letter “T” on the left corner.
Thanks!
Is this a problem for other Mac users? I cant load the dashboard at all now! It loads a white page with text links, and if I try to page back, it shows a tiny smile in the upper left corner. whf???
I want my dashboard back!!
It does this same when clicking on Admin as well. Is it theme related?
So I like the new dashboard look, but… (there’s always a but)….
I really wish we could customize the order in which those “widgets” are placed.
Also… while writing a post, having the tags and categories below the post is a pain. It would be best to continue to have them near the publish/unpublish box for easy access.
Otherwise, I think it’s pretty cool!
Good work!
The more I play, the more I like. I discovered that the top menu bar looks fine in IE but lousy in Firefox. I think also that I am going to have a problem with “Manage/Uploads” – far less easy to move around hundreds of photos quickly now. Before I didn’t have to scoll down the page to see, and could easily move between different pages of photos. I suspect that I will get frustrated with the new layout here. But for the others, loving it so far.
Yes, it changed mid activity for me too. But I enjoyed the surprise.
I really like the new layout, but it is a bit more complicated. I kind of liked the old layout.
~BR
It looks ok but it doesn’t load properly with Firefox, the new page pops up then it goes away and I get a very plain directory tree. Whats up?
Sorry, but I REALLY don’t like your new dashboard. It’s seems WAY more cluttered and complicated. I thought the original design was a bit overwhelming, but this is awful! I’m not much of a computer geek, and this complicated design is extremely confusing for peeps like me who don’t know much.
Also, I can’t download pictures like I used too. I used to post all my pictures off photobucket, and now I can’t do that . I used to be able to get them the exact size I wanted, know I don’t know how to do that.
Sorry to grump and complain, but I really wish you hadn’t changed it; the original way was just FINE!
I really really hate it.
Some features are cool. Others are NOT!!
Not really liking it.
Full Size on photos is NOT full size. Had to go in under HTML and adjust that.
The posting area is teeny tiny on my huge screen!
When you go to full screen, you don’t have title, add media etc.
YIKES. Definitely going to have to get used to this – bummer.
thanks matt … i love the new one.
Seem different but need to practice. Thanks
New technology to play with… There’s never enough, I tell you, never… 😉
The font size is ginormous. Not loving the color scheme, but I think this is just resistance to change. I’m not a fan yet, but I’ll give it a chance.
Thanks photomatt (and the other 89 who helped)!
Is this what it’s supposed to look like? I tried it in Safari, and the dashboard shows up as a blank white page. This is Firefox:
your new dash board sucks.. old is gold..
Super…
I love it, thank you so much
** hail for Matt **
** hail for AUTOMATTIC **
Same like FXSmom, thought the page didn’t load correctly. I think it take sometime before I adapt to the new design.
I sure hope all the bugs are fixed soon cos I’ve always been passionate about wordpress and the team. However with so many bugs like a simple edit of the widgets, or simply using the old insert image button now pops up a blank window can be quite frustrating.
Hope we don’t have more issues when using different browsers…
If everything runs the way it should, these changes are actually great!
HEY MATT! – What a PLEASANT SURPRISE to click and voila, everything that was wrong with the interface was GONE!
PLEASE THANK your Team for an exceptional and much needed web 2.0 fix. Beaytiful eye-candy and a delight to work with. BRAVO!
Hey Matt…. I know this is just starting… but please just take this observation… the GUI when is setting up to show spanish labels there are still some ones that can’t change it and keep the english label presentation.
Please also try another kind of colors… :S MERCY, MERCY !! he he he
Regards
Aram Salinas
I don’t like that the dashboard widgets are in much smaller print.
And on the Write Post page, I wish the category choices were still at the side rather than having to scroll down below the post I am writing to click on it.
Since I just discovered it, those are my only impressions so far — I’ll have to play around with it a bit.
Next time major changes are implemented, it would be nice to have some warning rather than just logging on to find everything different.
Seriously. WTF? I can no longer post images to my blog. I choose to add an image, upload the image, press to insert the post –
The little pop-up box goes white and…nothing…
I really don’t understand how this is an improvement on the previous, sleeker-looking version.
Awesome… just when I was feeling sad for not being in hosted domain to check out Candidate 2.5, you guys have installed it for us… Thanks a billion.
wonderful.
this new “interface” more beauty than before 😀
Being somewhat technically challenged I just have to say THANK YOU for these latest improvements. At long last, I have Widgets and Category clouds and all sorts of things I’d dreamed of on my sidebar. All of a sudden it made sense and was easy for me to manage. I am SO tickled! Thank you for making something wonderful even better. I “heart” WordPress!!!
I guess the new format is ok, a bit much for the casual blogger (like me) , probably excellent for the serious blogger. For some reason the widget for the statictics is very slow to load, and the right hand side next to the graph never did load. Wish we could minimize some of the parts we don’t need, like I don’t want to have the popular blogs lists take up so much space, I never use them, I just use tag search.
Matt, congratulations to you and your team. I’ve been through a lot of upgrades in my 20+ years of computing and for an upgrade of this magnitude, it’s as intuitive as can be and more intuitive than expected. Bravo
I wondered if you stopped working on wordpress. Now I know the rest of the story. Great Job Guys and Gals. I look forward to getting aclimated to the new dashboard. Thank you for your hard work.
Craig
And what about those who can’t read blue text? Some people can’t You know. In Sweden it’s “colorblindness” (don’t know the english medical word). I’m really sad over here. =(
Can You give us a color scheme option like gray.. or black? But not blue, it’s difficult for the eye.
Everything is easy to find.
nice. but some glitches? “link” doesn’t work in visual mode. 😉 hmmm. 😉 well done 😉 can we get some new themes soon? tks!
Yikes! iDidn’t know this was coming…
maybe like yahoo & google let you go back to their portal or old format, that would be nice.
at least… for a while.
Thanks.
the new layout is awesome. totally cool…and yea, i thought my browser had gone bonkers this morning when it took forever to load but now it’s okay. Thank you for the change. I like it.
I like the new look.
Comfortable…
But the baby blue colour is annoying 😦
I don’t like it.
The old color scheme was better. I prefer the category area in the write post/page section on the side rather than below. I also prefer the Recent Comments and Incoming Links areas to be below the Your Stuff and What’s Hot areas in the main dashboard section.
almost everything looks SO much better, cleaner.
i do like the small refinements such as ‘publish immediately’ which makes things more obvious, and renaming ‘presentation’ as ‘design’. Blog surfer looks a lot improved as well.
the only thing i’m not sure about is putting the categories below the post field. it was very convenient to have it right next to the text box.
good job, overall.
You could let us know in advance. I thought there is something wrong with my internet connection!!
Anyway, I don’t like the new one, old was great. Fonts, colors, .. . are terrible!
If possible, please put an option, for those who still would like to work with the old one.
So many comments already! I think this looks great and can’t wait to try everything out! Thanks WordPress!
Updates are always welcomed, but this dashboard re-design is bad for me along it is not working with well with Firefox..
This change threw me for a loop. I have encountered one glich so far. I have been unable to cut and paste in my text widgets. Is anyone else having this issue?
Wow, I hate to become a cliche by hating change. I usually like updates such as this. However…
1. Some of your ideas were good, but you truly need to rethink and change a few. First, I notice that you say the color can be changed, but I find no way to access my profile any longer.
2. It’s also troublesome that there is no way to return to the dashboard, except with my browser’s back arrow, once you go to the other functions.
3. I would plead with you that new isn’t always better… so please please please reconsider changes made to writing page. It would be great to have the category choices back to the right of the writing space and a longer tag entry blank. Also, having to use a scroll bar for them is really not a good thing.
4. While the previous style certainly needed improvement, this new one is difficult to navigate because, to my eyes, the sub-categories blend too easily with the main categories (perhaps a graphic designer could help with this issue).
5. Since you’ve gone to the widget format for info, it would be a wonderful idea to allow us to eliminate unwanted widgets. The blog stat redundancy is, to my tastes, distracting and unnecessary. In fact, the top 4 widgets on the dashboard page are all items that I would much prefer to have at the bottom, or gone all together; I find them all to be unneeded and not well executed. The “right now” column is completely unnecessary in my humble opinion.
In the positive ledger, the sleek look and new design for columns in the “Manage” section looks great. I really like that. Also, I can see what your thinking is in several areas, and I think you were on the right track even though the execution leaves something to be desired in places. To expand on the positive potential of the widget format (you’re not there yet – but it has potential if you give it some further work), it would be wise to give actual widget functionality to each element. In other words, just like other sites now allow (think Google, Yahoo – not that they’re any glistening realm of net perfection), it would be great to be able to move or remove widget elements.
Finally, since this comment isn’t nearly long enough, I would suggest that it would be wildly helpful to me to have much better explanations for the widgets available to be used on my blog. I’m very comfortable with my computer and navigating online, but must confess that the computer-geek-speak has me pretty much confused with what most of the widgets have to offer me. Not that I’m not a geek myself, just not enough of one to understand programmerese!
Thanks for listening to my thoughts. And please do give help on how to access profiles now so that I can change that icky color (which should be confined to use on PT Cruisers and pharmaceutical medications!).
The font sizes are so tiny!
I’m not a big fan of it since I just got used to the other dashboard. I would love to be able to have an option to go back to the original one, because for me that was very organized. I prefer my categories to be on the right hand side of my post (when I’m writing it) like the old dashboad had, because now I have to scroll down to find what I’m looking for, it’s more of a hassle a little bit. I don’t like the colors either. I’ll work with it more to find out if I like it, but I’m not a fan of change when I just got comfy with the other one. 😦
I do appreciate you’re efforts and work, I just don’t like the new dashboard, I thought the old one was more organized, so I don’t know why everyone – or people were saying it wasn’t. I like simplistic….this seems more complex.
Could someone please point me to the time stamp feature? I have looked but can not find. Since the time on wordpress is an hour earlier than where I am, my posts can be “off” on the date, and I would appreciate getting direction to where this feature is in the new dashboard.
Thanks!
Shu
Ohh no… i have much more time to post a new article to my blog
i like the old one..
Matt, can you give us the option for the new dashboard… like yahoo offer the classic to access the yahoo mail?
Just popped in to do a couple of things and WTF!!! I am so Hating this, but hopefully that feeling will pass. So far, nope, still hating it. GGRrrrr… 👿
It’s my first month here… and I don’t like it. >.<
glad to see the stats on the front page.
Where exactly do I go to get the old theme?!!? Please tell me in directions IE: click on dashboard, then click on themes etc etc.
So far it’s good… I know it could use a bit more improvement in the future. But thanks anyway 🙂 As long as it doesn’t get in the way, I love it.
Takes a little getting used to, but I think it will be better once I get more familiar with it.
this is great enhancement to the dashboard and the widget really helps with many information in one screen.
tx.
This is like a new toy… 🙂 Now maybe even the sidebar widgits might work! IE6 and Firefox both look great!
Its fine to navigate but could you pls do something about the horrible red band? The earlier dashboard was far neater.
cool one… thanks. 😀
Dashboard Page looks good, everything at one place.
Please give option to move widgets on Dasboard page, so that I can put whatever I require most on top etc., like I don’t require a “Right now” widget on top, so I should be able to drag it to bottom etc.
“Recent Comments” section is great, but comments notification is redundant in “Your stuff” wdiget too, making the page extra long.
Anyway, it would great, if we have DRAG and MOVE feature on Dashboard.
In the first sight, I really confused. I thought the page didn’t load right. But after reloading for several time, I realized that the Dashboard has changed. It’s cool, I don’t have to go to the Blog Stats to check my stats or to Comments page only to check the new comments. :mrgren:
Is this looks also compatible in mobile browser, like OperaMini?
Pardon the ring on my previous post. I’ve clicked and clicked around further, enough that I think I figured out the hiding place of this feature (and the time problem). Thanks!
Shu
Hate the new dashboard!!!!!!!!!
Seriously. You need to allow people a transition or something. Give me the old dashboard please.
Instead of changing the dashboard to a new format, you should provide a componentized dashboard that we can set as we like.
How about using the same technique as you use for the Design->Widgets page. i.e. let me drag and drop stuff to configure it the way I like.
Conduct a short survey, get some data on this topic and share it with us. This is the first new thing you’ve done that I absolutely dislike.
Saeed
Things don’t just look different, they WORK different. This really sucks. HATE, HATE, HATING it. This is not going to be an over night adjustment for folks by any means!
WHY???
Very good job, carry on
This will give lots of new ideas to create more new blogs at WordPress.com
OMG!
i’m so shock when i login!
thanks for the hardwork, it’s cool
I love colour! Just look at my blog! Thank you for the new look. I love it! I want to blog some more now. I think I am managing this one bbetter than the one before.
Thanks,
Lwando
Thank you! I am going to dig in and try it ALL!
suggestion:
in the create new post, can i suggest that the ‘category’ potion remain at the right side (above the ‘Related’)?
I despise and hate change of any kind.
If you wrote hate change on every grain of sand in the Sahara, it would not even come close to expressing my hatred of change — Off with the head of Mr./Mrs./Miss/Mss…Change.
Don’t like it.
I don’t like the new dashboard. Way too much information.
Okay this gave me a nasty start but I think I’m excited now. I need to muck around a bit. Btw, just wanted to thank you guys for the work you put in 🙂
Way to fix something that was not broken in the slightest. And by fix, I mean completely break.
Have to go into the forums/feedback to report the MAJOR bug with making links in posts.
It sucks bad.
And, when I say that it sucks, I actually mean that I really really really hate it. Like, to the point of hyperventilation.
Like, to the point that if you told me the older version would be available by upgrading and paying for it, I would actually be tempted.
