Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.

So, if I get this right, MP3 uploads are now allowed without the paid upgrade?
If so, it might convince me to pay for an upgrade, as counter-intuitive as it sounds…
Awesome.
Mantap (Indonesian)
care to tell me how to post a photo? why can i no longe post photos from my WebShots album???? Right now i am saying this improvment is not so good!
Oops, I guess MP3 uploads are still not allowed without the paid upgrade.
Still, the “security” message is a bit misleading.
cool…n nice 😀
Talk about a shocker! I opened up the admin page, and WHAP! I thought I had added a bad plug-in to Firefox…
I love the tag editor! Thank you thank you thank you for that. And the media galleries… YAY! But I dunno about the META editor thing. It’d be nice if t’wer an actual meta tag editor, but hey, you know?
The widget page is definitely a bit of a change.
@ Critical Badger [ http://wordpress.com/blog/2008/04/04/new-dashboard/#comment-38612 ] As for the spell checker, I just use the one in Firefox. It works on the fly, and is completely customizable.
Great effort! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
thank you for the new admin dash board wordpress,
BTW, it’s not just the dashboard. I was just writing a post and that page has changed as well. Who is the designer that though that putting the Categories widget as a short but wide scrolling window was a good idea. It’s not!
I have 60+ categories and now I can only see 5 or 6 at any given time? That’s a lot of extra scrolling and a lot of wasted space given the width of it. And I can’t even resize it? Come on guys. It should be a tall widget in the side bar or resizable or something.
Please return to old format. Please!!!!!!
Saeed
a bit of a shock when I logged in today, but I like it.
the widgets section is heaps better.
And Matt, you aren’t going to ask me why I like the old one better?
The type font in the new one is too small. I can’t read it. If I can’t get this fixed I will have to move. Sorry.
I like the new dashboard. It’s quite functional and good for a quick information overview. Hopefully y’all will work on a mobile phone-friendly interface soon. Summer is coming and I might hit the road, yet still update my blog.
Keep up the great work! WordPress rules!
Still learning how to ride the bike but it seems fantastic
Oh man, thank you so much!
i really like the new dashboard and the new options like the gallery
i have 2 get used 2 it but thats ok, u did a great job with the new design 🙂
Well… I don’t like it and I miss the “zemified”…
Very nice thanks for all the hard work
its really good Search posts and pages ………
The reduction in point size for type on the Dashboard page is a major negative for me, since my job requires reading or writing for just about the entire workday, and my eyes get fatigued. I have normal vision. I can’t imagine what a headache the smaller type must be for those whose vision can’t be corrected to 20/20.
I assume the smaller typeface is necessary because so much has been put on the Dashboard page. I find that very irritating. For instance, before, if you wanted to check out your blog’s stats, that page was only one click away. It’s an interesting feature, but it’s not a necessary feature (except possibly for a few), and it takes up a good deal of space that could’ve been used to put more immediately useful material in larger type. The same with comments: they were easily accessed before; why cram them all onto the same page with other, unrelated material, just because it keeps people from having to make an extra mouse click?
It’s great that coding in posts is more stable now, but as others have said, most things were working fine already. In some ways, you’ve traded off ease of function for mere convenience: three steps rather than five (just for example) sounds good, but isn’t good if those three steps are harder to figure out. To repeat prior comments, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
It’s rather incredible to me that WordPress didn’t a) announce its proposals for change at an early stage of development, and b) seek out a number of beta-testers representing the whole spectrum of members – including those of us who don’t readily deal with change when it comes to tech matters. You come across as assuming that the “improved” features are easier for *everyone*, when in fact different styles of thinking make some features significantly more difficult to implement for a number of people. And at the forums, finding/getting an answer can be pretty confusing at present.
Some of the changes will wind up being good for the majority, but some of them just aren’t good changes at all for others of us. (For instance, while I learned how to get the “classic” dashboard look back, that didn’t help with small type fonts on that page.) I’ve read a number of other comments about more complex comment moderation as well as use of media within posts, and really am pretty displeased about the process by which all the changes were made, as well as by the changes themselves.
I love the full screen mode and bulk image uploading. Can’t find the spell-checker. There are some fomatting problems. IE will not paste correctly from clipboard. Firefox OK
Keep tweaking.
I am on a MAC too.. when uploading pix and waiting for the page to load after “insert image” the page never loads, just freezes. I have not been able to load a picture since. I would like the option to go back to regular pic loading if possible. That was AWESOME because it happened instantly and was easy to work with. With the new image loader it just does not work. I do like the instant preview. Can I have the old image loading style back? 🙂
not much improvement just nice theme only. keep rollin’ Matt
Awesome!!!!!!!!! Thanks WordPress Team!!! Keep up the great work! Look forward to next week for even more new things haha!
Cheers!
God, I hate this new design! I can’t find the “Post Time Stamp” window for my articles. Can we have the old one back? Please?
It’s clean and elegant and I love it.
And it is AWESOME. I’m loving it.
And just when I’d got used to the other dashboard! Initial impression, don’t like it. But that’s probably cos its new and different.
Regardless, the work you’ve put in is appreciated so thanks (I think!).
This is terribly UGLY. Please, go back to the CLEANER classic.
The formatting doesn’t disappear once you save your post on Safari anymore. *Big* thank you from me.
But I have a few problems with the dashboard though. First, big orange bar. I read on other comments that you”ll be able to change the color theme for classic, so I guess I’ll wait. But really, my first impression was “ew” because of it, it seems so out of place, like it has nothing to do with the rest of the page.
Also, I feel that “your stuff” and “what’s hot” should come first on the dashboard. There’s already a mention to the recent comments on the “your stuff” area, and “stats” already have their own page (by the way, the second stat graph doesn’t seem to load for me). I understand the two first tables are smaller and easier to scroll past, but it still seems a strange order to me. I hope you consider these suggestions.
Other than those things I mentioned, the design looks really pretty. I like the font and its size, the colors (apart from the orange), how the main links don’t look so boxed anymore, the cleanness… I’m sure it took a lot of work, so thank you. 🙂
Hey Matt… Good stuff! I always enjoy upgrades.
I’m glad people can’t go back to the old dashboard. You just gotta roll with the punches and keep changing with the times.
Can’t wait to play around a little more!
This layout blew me away… Totally…
It doesn’t seem to give me the option to download a photo from my desktop. Why would I need a url? I’m confused. I do like that the stats are already there, but I don’t get the image changes.
“…lost more than half of it because the dashboard had just changed…”
“I was in the middle of writing a post when you made the change.”
Dashboard…WP switched into Third version –without date, time/’heads up’/notice because?
Reaction you got –last time you did this, imparted NO wisdom?
Dashboard…colors: un-important –to YOU? How about to those: who have color-blindness issues?
Dashboard change…without option to opt in/out because?
Dashboard changes…more important –to rearrange the design –Before fixing existing bugs because?
If you were about to bite into sandwich –waiter cleared your table, swiped away the plate –walked off without a word –you’d be “thrilled” –gaga at the “change”?
I Don’t Think so. What happened to: ordinary courtesy, manners, treating others as you would be treated?
HATE “new” dashboard. –But since you did this without Open in-put, enabling test, option, respect or even notice, no doubt, you DON’T care. –You’re just scanning the Comments: for praise.
Old dash’ is better …
Please add “edit” to the delete spam approve choices for comments in moderation (it isn’t obvious to click on the commenter’s name and also to be comparable across the options)
Please move the categories adjacent to the text box (as Sean suggested, http://wordpress.com/blog/2008/04/04/new-dashboard/#comment-38756 You’ve made short mouse movements (such as selecting categories for posts) difficult) Otherwise even on high res monitors one has to stop and move a lot of real estate to get to quick items.
Also, tags are now doubled and tripled on individual posts and the sidebars on post are now removed. [may be theme specific– at least it is Sapphire but not, thankfully, the other two themes I use] This goes back to the earlier discussions on why blog owners must advertise tags/categories on WordPress.com and not on one’s own blog. It also looks like an idiot wrote the post because the of the duplication of tags (in post footer; added by WordPress.com) I don’t want the redundancy and would like to opt out.
I also need the sidebar back because I want people to see what else they might find of interest at my site. It also makes extra effort for a reader to go back to the “home” page (if they can figure that out) in order to keep reading the blog. Readers don’t need extra effort. I also had to re-do the sidebar to make sure that readers knew how to find the categories on MY site for related info. The new “Explore posts in the same categories:” tags inserted by WordPress are a mis-statement at best– They send readers to WordPress.com, not to my site, and to who knows what other kinds of entries. There still isn’t any evidence that these links to WordPress actually bring traffic back to the user and not to Automattic.
Could you also test the color scheme for the dashboard top-most tabs for accessibility, please? They are nearly invisible.
It might be a good idea to have someone watch users and track the distances now required to find the most used items (like categories). Then re-arrange the spacing (and fonts and background colors) for users. There are many good aspects to the new design (please don’t mess with other themes. I can no longer use the Sapphire, I guess.)
How do you spellcheck? That’s a simple thing that I can’t seem to find in my editor anymore.
Fanta!
Don’t like it too much. Hate the color scheme too. Sorry.
Looks gawky in Firefox 3!
Hmm. It’s not bad, but it looks like.. MacDonald’s. I mean, yes, there aren’t problems, it’s easy, but it’s not… comfy.
And there is a problem. When you are in Stats, you can’t click on Dashboard, to go back, you Use must click “back” from the browser.
I can’t stand the Widgets administration. Everything else will just take some getting used to I think.
Yup it is faster than before…
I suggest:
a. WP gives two option: the new and the old (classic) just like Yahoo! Mail ( I aggree with @ LVR)
b. Multiple upload is better appear on below the message/post space.
I wonder why images can not be “thumbnail” automatically?
Looking forward to having admin explanation/response.
Thanks

Matt, I would like to thanks to you 🙂
Hey,
It was a surprise to see the change- somehow, I agree with some of the above comments. Its new so my initial reaction is that I don’t like it. However, I think it might grown on me (will have to!).
There is too much white and the colours are too light- the older version have clear definition and structure.
Kind regards.
wow!!
Fantastic
tnx
Thank you!
Awesome. I love it. Thank you!
I am excited what will come next!
Thanks! I love the new dashboard. Much more easy to overlook. It make sense for my to-fastclicking ADHD-brain 🙂
It’s nice, but I don’t like the fixed width. Bought (not sure if that’s written right) me a wide screen to have lot’s of space and now I’m working in the corner of it 😥
Love it! Love the fact that I don’t have to click around to get to my blog stats or the spam queue. But I would like to make a suggestion. Why not make the dashboard a 3 column one, so that the “what’s hot” section comes right at the top on the right (I don’t like scrolling down so much!)
Thanks for the upgrade, guys. It would be nice to be able to customize this view in the future. I’d like to see My Stuff at the top. I appreciate that you always try to make improvements.
yes. i feel like learning how to ride a bike all over again. 🙂
i lurve this new features! thanks! 😀
like it!.. wrap all function i need when opening dashboard.
It seems for me to have gone from simple and straight forward, to all kinds of things a novice like me finds confusing.
The changeover happened as I was posting. Computer locked up, and I had to try several things to shut it down and hope I didn’t lose my post.
It seems to have initially lost versatility in moving images on the writing page. Then I had no idea how to get photos it said were posted to the post become visible. 12 or so attempts instead of the usual one. My spell checker just says error and a bunch of gobbily gook. Hard to tell if things are bugs or just hard to decipher. Maybe now I’m supposed to press some button or something to turn the spell checker on? A bug I hope.
It also appears as if someone went to bland school to make things fainter, and once again, incomprehensible to the WEB newcomers. More is not necessarily better.
Hopefully the surprise and lack of definition will become an issue of the past as I tone down to the less merrier more. Heck, maybe even that hour to just get one photo right will get down to the ten seconds of before.
I might also get used to the multiple edit and save buttons around on the same page at times.
But my initial impression was after my computer freeze up and shut down; that I had differed to some old default page. I was about to look for ways to get the better designed (simple) and sharper one back. Then I decided to check up on the site, to see if some changes were actually made across the boards. Now I find we have been had by improvements.
We will see.
Thanks
Thank you for these new features !
I am proud to be a WordPress-Blogger !! 8)
regards from Germany !
New dashboard, first gripe… I seem to recollect there being an edit mode for comments in the old dashboard. Where’s that gone? So now, if I make a spelling mistake in a comment and don’t spot it until after I’ve posted (which all too frequently happens unfortunately), there’s no way I can correct it. Bummer!
I think WordPress has made it more sophisticated, I muttered, not looking up
You means it’s harder to use, said my wife who knows a bit about such things
Well, probably, I muttered.
the words are too small and hurts my eyes; things were fine; if ain’t broke don’t fix it; baby blue?
it – is – SO – awesome!
Well I like it… I was a bit surprised and I think I need some time to play with it, but I like it.
However, two things…
– How do I edit a picture in Manage – Media if the picture had no title previously? I see that new pictures require a title, but how do I add one to the old pictures that didn’t have any?
– Isn’t it possible to have the Permalink appear on Pages while they’re being written the way they appear on Posts? The round-about way that I had to go to change the Permalink on a page was a pain.
Otherwise, good stuff, but I would like to change the color scheme.
Hi guys – looks very promising, especially the full-page writing option. The importing from Word or Plain Text gizmos seem to be either very counter-intuitive now, or don’t actually do anything…
Also, I stepped right into the middle of the change and it baffled the hell out of me – a little notice that it was coming, and when, really was needed. Other than that, I think I’ll like it – once I figure out where stuff is now hidden!
This dashboard is good, but i do not like the page for write posts because it was better before, with option in two columns
Don’t mind the upgrade – nice clean look – but why I am having so much trouble embedding a YouTube video?? Related to the upgrade? Have tried all the options suggested!
oh sorry – I’m using Leopard, but had no problems uploading pre-new Dashboard design.
I knew this was coming after this long period of silence 🙂 After spending a few minutes with the new design, I recovered from the shock… and, what can I say… it’s much much much better than the old! And plenty of new features, too! Thanks for all the hard work…
One thing I didn’t like is the widgets page. Previously I was able to see all three sidebars at one glance. Now I need to change it from the drop-down menu. So when you want to drag one widget from one sidebar to another, it was practically much easier.
One thing more: when I want to copy a part of the HTML in one of the text widgets, I realized I can’t select the part I want to copy. Is it the new design? OR something about my browser?
I think I’ll get used to it eventually… Love some of the new features… But I hope the spell check is back soon… And is the word count coming back? (But I do miss having the categories on the side of the post box….)
the colors are weak but it is fun. i still have to figure out some of the ADVANCED features…love? romance? what for???
Susan in Italy
It took long enough to learn the old dashboard and how to tweak it to do what I wanted. Why couldn’t you leave well enough alone?
The biggest problem is that I can’t get photos into my posts. No problem getting them into the media library but nothing I do after that will place them in a new post.
Hate it… I think it was much better with the old design.. 😦
Though I love the part that you said there will be no more problem when writing with MAC, because I hate it when I have to edit something, because the space just deleted automatically and it messed up the layout of my writing .. Well done for this one, thanks Matt! 🙂
I strongly suggest you guys to reconsider again for the new dashboard design… The font is too small and feels like it’s squeezed altogether just to make it fit into the layout.
I don’t feel like being in a blog that have a sense of art anymore..Now it’s like “trying hardly to be more practical and focuses only on functional part”.
Again, hate the new dashboard design.
Great Job Guys! I’m so glad I got out of blogger… this is so much nicer!
Hi, Matt
With this new features, I found troubles. I can not edit some features.. please see my blog. I have trouble to change back…
Thanks for your attention
don’t really like the new look…WP used to look more professional. Would have been better if there was an option to revert back to the old skin. Would make navigation a hell lot better and also look more professional.
but great work on the new features, minus the new look.
Nice, but please restore original colors!
Much easier now to navigate!
Simply fantastic!
was a little surprised at first, but now i really like it!
good work ^^
I was virtually lost at first! I questioned myself- is it my blog, am I in the right place, is anything wrong with the blog.
After strolling a while, I got my sense. I could understand that the masters of wordpress had redesigned the dashboard.
It is looking fantastic and more intelligent. Thanks a lot!
I’m not sold on this, I have to say, especially for editing blogs. I use Windows Live Editor most of the time, but sometimes I edit posts on site and the new narrower pane on the post cuts off larger photos, so the WYSIWYG angle goes down the tubes, really.
The new Dashboard is better, though.
wouw scary. I have to explore more but it nice to see some change!
Well, I can’t get any pictures to upload and I can’t find the spell checker – sort of disappointed.
Make that Windows Live Writer, above.
I agree with tiger’s eyes about the small font type. I am the kind who checks my stats only once in a few days but comments I check everyday. So I would have preferred it if the stats option was on another page. And even if I do decide to check stats everyday, I don’t mind the extra click. Energy saved by easy readability (larger font) is more important than energy saved from clicking.
It’s amazing, but we could use some new themes too. Thanks guys.
😦 not good. The before was better this dashboard .
I think you should add a show/hide button for boxes, as the dashboard home got pretty long. And Good Work! 😀
Thanks for the upgrade!!! Even though I do my blog(s) early in the morning from the “ends of the earth” and am bleary eyed while getting caffiened up, it didn’t take me long to figure out there had been a change. It wasn’t difficult to figure out because much of the same format was in place to suggest that you had changed something. I’ll keep crashing around to see the new features you added. Maybe next time you do a major overhaul, you might want to send a quick e-mail to your active bloggers to warn us. But really, it was not that difficult and I’m thankful for this site. Great work!!!
You made a great job … ehy didn’t you call it wp 3.0? 😛
Please…bring the old one back!!
And ALL my images is gone… I Will have them back!!!
My computer broke som weeks ago, so i can not uppload the images again..
This is not good.
Mmm… I don’t like it for the moment.
Many problems with links and photos… For example: I underline a word, I click on insert link… And… TA DA!!! A square little window appears as usual, but it’s white and it doesn’t let me do anything…
Hope U fix everything soon…
im utterly disappointed with the new design.
I like it very much
I want to thank you for the clever new way for the post slug, it is really awesome 🙂
The new dashboard is okay, but uploading pics today has been a headache and the font size on my posts is smaller. Also I can’t paste from Word for a new post. Guess you guys have some tweaking to do.
ahh I really liked how the old dashboard was centered in my screen. I have a fairly large screen with high res and I really like pages that are centered in my browser.
cheers
The color scheme . . . someone is trying to be clever
The font size . . . someone is trying to ruin my eyes
The category box . . . someone was asleep, really asleep-or trying to be too clever. The long WIDE box instead of a TALL narrow box ALONG the side. I can’t figure that one out.
I noticed a lot of folks couldn’t figure out how to edit comments-the button was there and you removed it, is it cleaner? Maybe . . . but form should follow function.
The image loader-give me a few more tries. Caption box: where does the caption show? In my way of thinking caption means words that show up underneath a picture; like, you know . . . a caption. Cane we still wrap text around images?
I appreciate the free service, I really do, it has allowed me a space to present the workings of my industry, but if I designed spaces like that dashboard (color/bars/font size) I’d have less work.
