Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.

Well to put it mildly, I dislike it. I have thought all day that something was wrong with the CSS.
I appreciate the fact you are trying to make improvements on the site and thank you for that, but the page layout is the pits, maybe it looks bad as I use a high resolution and everything is in one corner.
Tiger’s eye! I agree totally.
it looks great… little different, but I’ll get used to it. 🙂
Love it !!!
takes getting used to, but i like it! 😀
I knew something was going on! You guys where so… “Quiet” lately. 😀
whoa !
I thought I messed something up when I opened up this AM.
ok, … change is a good thing… breath deep… everything’s still there,
Whew !
Thanks guys.
Amazing 🙂
the new features are cool!
I like the design. It’s much easier to add video to posts with the icon. The colour scheme is a bit bright, but all in all I’m really happy with the new design. Thank you! 🙂
I’m relatively new to this, so while looking at my plastic wigs posts, there you were… new and gleaming! Works for me!
jimmyboi2.wordpress.com
I guess your right. I’m starting to get a little used to the new Dashboard, but I can’t find out how to post pictures, or edit and save my widgets! 😦 Could you please tell me how.
Hate Hate Hate it……
hey! who moved my cheese?
yes, it’s pretty sleek.
how do i edit comments left on my blogs, or add a reply to those coments? also, where is my rich text editor so i can italicize, embolden, etc.?
It threw me for a loop when I first saw it. I thought my computer was dying again. May take awhile, but I think I can cope.
fuh-ruh-strating. I spazzed when I first saw it.
it’ll certainly take some getting used to… cross fingers.
I don’t like the colour…. it’s so reader-unfriendly… the earlier one was preferred. One suggestion: Can there be options for people to retain the old design? Or can you give us dark and light colour schemes to choose from pls?
Z
ok, so sorry…i see this has already been addressed.
i’ll just click on the comment author’s name….
I like it. I had to drive around a bit to learn the lay of the land. I appreciate WordPress staying on top of things with upgrades. 🙂
I hate it, it’s so confusing, I nearly accidently deleted a page because the delete button it so close to the publish button….
I just wish it worked. I lost a post yesterday during your update. And now the spell checker, the image editor and other items on the cool toolbar do not work.
Kinda old fashioned. I’d rather have what is boring and works than what is new, cool and broken.
Great!, but you forget the option “edit comment”, is the only thing 😦
The new design is nice, but for some reasons I’m not able to add a link or a picture in my posts (i have to use html, not useful, expecially if I have to add many links): the little window that pops up is white and empty. :(((
I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.13, if it’s relevant to know.
I love it. Like some other people, I was confused to see the new look at first and thought there’s something wrong with my computer. Thanks!
Hi Matt,
guess you cannot make it right and perfect for everyone but I highly appreciate the efforts you guys make to satisfy a “not paying customer”.
What I really like is the changes you made on the gallery/media library. So much easier to find images. Also I like the features writing posts much better than before – especially the much easier way to upload pictures. What I do not quite like is that it looks much more complicated now – but I assume it’s kind of “practising” in order to find the right buttons. Finding the tags/categories for new posts is a bit annoying – especially when you forget to enter at least one – the new post then disappears when published without the tags somehow. At least I could not find it again and had to rewrite. It does not automatically go into an “uncategorized” category any more as before. Is this intended?
Also I find the part with the “statistics” such as “Right now…..you have…..” belongs at the bottom of the page because I find it much more interesting whether you have comments on your posts or not – the statistics have lower priority to my logic. A blog is a tool for communication to my understanding not for chasing statistics. “Your staff…..” should have higher priority on the page.”
Although the whole layout is very well organized it looks a bit complicated and cluttered. Sorry – but the eye tells you something different from what is intended. I am talking only about the “Dashboard” page. All the other pages look much better and are much easier to navigate – such as the “manage posts” page etc.
Just as an input. I think everyone will get used to it sooner or later. Thanks again for all the work!
Wow, This is cool. And when I say that believe me it is true. I hate changes but this one is a great one. Thank you guys for all work.
Ok, back and clicking around again. I Love it. 😀
love the new design….
I don’t like it… 😦
Oh, um, sorry to say but the image handling is quite poor. Whereas before I could copy and paste the html for the image with a link to the post, I can’t see how to do that now. The image library doesnt seem to have the url of the image. ???!!! Do I have to always write my own html, going to the post to get both the post’s url and the images url? Please bring back the easy copy and paste mechanisms for referencing an image.
I often use images in places other then where they were originally uploaded.
Also, I have always wondered why “Manage/Uploads” or now Manage/Media Library” won’t allow you to upload images directly into the library.
This post also promises that we can upload multiple files at once. I have not yet found out how to do that. It is not self evident.
Hope you can fix the image handling guys, cos I love the rest.
???
Matt, I have to be honest. Except for a slightly different visual appearance, I see no evidence of an “upgrade”.
1) The spell checker is gone???
2) I cannot embed YouTube videos (still), with either method
3) I can’t upload clip art or any graphics for that matter???
Unless I’m really, really missing something, this is more than one step backwards.
Great new post editor… I can actually use it!!
I am 3/4 blind and the Dashboard light blue with blue letters are difficult for me to read — even when enlarging the screen
Any way to modify the color scheme?
Thanks, ExPreacherMan.
The whole thing feels like the printout on an old-fashioned printer…pixellated fonts, weird colours, ugly buttons. I don’t like the smaller size of everything, I don’t like having everything on the same page. The “write” page feels clunky. I don’t see the point in moving the post button. Now, everything time you try to post, you’ll reach for the wrong part of the page. But what’s really annoying is the fact that the categories are moved to the bottom of the page. In the sidebar, you could reach them without having to scroll. Now you have to scroll down the page, scroll through the categories, and then scroll BACK UP the page to either hit the post button or continue editing.
Mostly I hate the skin. It’s ugly, it’s hard on the eyes. Between the smaller font and the additional needs to scroll, the interface is less accessible to older people and people with disabilities. Great job! So what’s next in the pipeline, white-on-white text? Klingon-only interface? This whole thing sucks.
I can’t find the “Post Time Stamp” window articles. How do I edit dates??
I am now officially in LOVE with WordPress. Thanks for the amazing update, guys!
It looks good. Cleaner and modern updated look.
It definitely will take a while to get used to and figure out where everything is. (So I was hating it while I couldn’t find where to upload media for some reason. Duh!). But I’m new to this anyhow (1 of the 298,194 blogs created and 1 of the 381,855 new users in March), so I’m still figuring things out.
You can never please everyone, so GREAT effort and results. Bravo.
An additional thanks to the WordPress team for a great product. I initially created my blog in Blogger, but I didn’t even get to posting because it lacked the “out-of-the-box” flexibility and customization I was looking for. I’ve been very happy with WordPress and will continue to explore its features. Thanks!
I noticed it last night. I’m thinking I don’t like it much, but then I don’t deal well with change. I’ll give it time.
I do love the new image features. Should make it lots easier to find old images that I want to use again.
Color Scheme is tolerable. Couldn’t we have one in line with our blogs theme or something?? Or at least have a gallery??
Wow…
I was waiting for this new wp with anticipation.. Finally WordPress rocks all the way.
Thanks guys.. I have tested this 2.5 version with my hosted blog. It works superb.
Thanks a lot. Keep growing…
– Zeezat
I think I’ll grow to love it, but I must say, the gigantic red bar at the top is awful. First, red usually means “AAAAAAAGH SOMETHING’S WRONG!!!! FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT!!!!!” but in this usages it’s just like, “oh, hi! I’m red against all this blue.” Also, the information contained below the red bar is completely superfluous. That’s information I do not need to know about my blog. All of it except the “write new post” button should be the very last things at the bottom of the page. When I come to my dashboard I want to know: who’s left a comment, who’s linking to me, and what’s my most popular post, not that I’m using the Spring theme. I hope this is useful info.
can still add custom slug?
I’m soooo not understanding how to properly use the image uploading now. I am not tech savvy at all, and would really appreciate some clear step by step instructions on the new image uploading. I was able to upload some photos to my blog post today, but it was very difficult…I can’t find “where they are going” after I upload them…before there was the “browse all” option…and now they are just invisible to me…I am having to just put them in one at a time. I’m sure it’s just because I don’t know what the heck I’m doing…so please put up some new instructions on the image uploading…pretty please….Thanks! 🙂
The more I use it the more I hate it
I’m all admiration for the dedication and love with which all of you at WordPress work. I guess it’ll take some time for dumbos like me to get around and understand the new features. But I have no doubt they’ll be a great help and an improvement on what was already the best place to blog on.
Good, but, what about the language?
I want it in Spanish.
=)
you seem to have forgotten to include the editing of comments in your new dashboard design
I really appreciate all the work and effort to help make wordpress better for everyone. However, I really find the new dashboard too cluttered. And I really look forward to more new colour schemes, this old scheme just doesn’t work for me.
HELP!!
Can’t find how to “Upload” a video to have it post like an image rather than a link. Where did that feature go?
I can post a URL (to YouTube video), but it shows up as link — not very appealing.
Thanks!
It was weird at first, but luckily, I saw your post in the “latest updates” section and I said “ok, it’s not my computer going crazy, it’s not a weird Romanian WordPress thing, it’s a new feature”. [wordpress translations in Romanian are veeery funny, to say the least…]
I haven’t had time to look at it thoroughly, but I like it already because I have all the important stuff on the main screen – posts, stats, write new and all these things
thanks a lot! 🙂
Now I believe in Santa Claus
Other than the fact that I must have hit Publish at the exact moment you guys were updating the Write page (I lost my entire 500 word post!), I love the new design.
Guys. Previously wordpress.com worked best in firefox. I switched to firefox for this reason. Now. Not so much. For example. Add links just displays a white pop up window. I cannot begin to explain how annoying this is.
the new dashboard layout fails.
i like da new design. compact and informative. all in one glance. but larger font would be better. 🙂
Not bad…
More nightmares:
In the old system full alignment was tough. Now it’s simply impossible
Why is it now so difficult to keep the desired space between paragraphs?
Links don’t work. You click on the post and you are directed to your dashboard.
Why is format the predetermined selection? Why not paragraph?
Love the improvements! WordPress is absolutely outstanding. All you guys who are disconcerted by the Dashboard changes: get over it! WordPress.com is already No. 1 in Left-Handed Complement’s Blogging Process Hall of Fame, but you’ve just received Platinum status.
I hate it! I just can’t push the photos to scraps! 😦
Nice! Very Nice! Thanks.
I am going to have to agree with tiger’s eyes’ comment. You guys are all probably young whipper snappers with 20/20 vision! I am an over 40 baby boomer! The first thing to go when you hit 40 is the vision! It sucks! Please be kind to us baby boomers and make the font size bigger! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would it possible to have the option of reverting to the old dashboard? I found it much less clunky, much more useful, and much less confusing.
I’m not thrilled with the cluttered look of the new Dashboard, but OK. It has some nice features.
I wasn’t sure I liked the new dashboard, then I discovered the full screen writing mode. Maybe it was always there and I just now noticed it, but I think it’s great! A lot easier to use than the little box.
I like it, but I still need to get used to it.
the layout is ok but the colours are bad.
I love the new dashboard! It eliminates so much surfing around…still there are two link buttons I want to see on every single page of the dash board is the one which drops down to allow a post to be written on every blog I own. The other is a button which allows me to visit the main page of every blog I own. I want to see this link on every page of the dashboard. I have more than one and I frequently want to just take a look at them all to see how they visually seem to my readers surfing between the blogs. I have a by pass built in, but it can’t take me to my private blogs. I hope these two buttons will be a part of future tweaks. It can’t be that hard to add them and with this new design, they can finally fit right in.
The widget edit is cut off. When editing a widget you can only see half the edit box and buttons. Otherwise, I like the new look and feel.
I love it, great work!
i’m having problem adding hyperlinks. when i click the link button, the small box shows up to give me the option to add in the information, but the box is empty.
How do I edit comments on this new sucky layout???
I loved the old one. Actually I do like the information next to the new graph that tells you which post is the most popular overall, but otherwise it is too much.
Please help with comment editing.
Never change a winning team. I’m totally panic. I have to write & publish but I can’t. People are waiting for me. In the first houres I can’t publish a video, nothing. If I post the URL video to my new text/page I see that the system is not taking the whole URL but just a small thing of it. If I put it right in my text. Nothing. I know I’m not the greatest in computertechnique. But my old horse was riding so well. HELP!!!!!!
prince pozzebocken one, amsterdam-holland
You should at least give us the choice between the old and the new one. Because of this I’m deleting all my blogs and moving to blogger or zoomshare or something. Most likely going to wetpaint.
I love the new dashboard! Thanks! 🙂
Matt,
Something I think you should have let users know earlier:
If you’re having problems with the new dashboard, try shutting down and reloading your web browser. I was getting a headache while experiencing problems in the editor when I tried to upload images, insert text, and create links to web pages.
Of course, the spell checker didn’t come back, but I understand you’re working on that, and I have a spellchecker on Firefox, so its not too much of a problem for me.
At first, I was a little rattled at the design changes, but I’m learning to ride that bike…
I do have a couple of criticisms, however:
The color scheme…. Well, it would be nice to be able to change that… But, maybe I’m just old fashioned…
With most users going to wide screen monitors, It would be nice to be able to stretch the editor left and right…
The font used in the editor is a little too small, which makes for difficult reading when italicizing the text…
Also, I would like to be able to stretch my Tags window, as that would make for easier browsing of the Tags when selecting them.
Other than that, I’m quite pleased with the overall upgrade and increased functionality.
Cheers
A really terrific upgrade. I’m still getting used to it, but I love it already.
Many thanks!
Awesome Job, I really love the layout, Clean and Smooth!
Thanks
Is it just me or the upload thing doesn’t work on Safari of Mac. I tried uploading with IE on windows and it worked like a charm. Safari or Camino on Mac could not work with the upload.
I just noticed the new layout now when I was posting to one of my blogs.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I mention I love it?!
Great job guys, keep up the good work. 😀
I had to scroll down quite a bit to get to this point! All I can say Congratulations on a breathtaking job. And thanks for making my blog a little more attractive.
malathi
thanks for working so hard for us!
i love it.
🙂
P.S. – I just discovered the FullScreen Editor mode. Love it!!!
Cheers
Don’t like it at all. Have tried to adjust and click through and get used to it, but don’t find the changes helpfull at all. At least we users should be given the chance to arrange the boxes in a way that are usefull to us. Because right now everything I ever needed to know from my dashbord is right on the bottom and the top shows me information I couldn’t care less about. Am very disappointed.
I too dislike it.
grrrrrrrrrr…
I liked the old one better.
Cause nobody is here at this moment one more comment.
problem 1: I can’t publish a video anymore
problem 2: normally you saw your titles were you worked on (1 click & go!). Now not anymore, true? If I want to see the preview & than straight back to my post I have to go to find it back somewere else. I hope I am stupid & not wordpress.
Question: is it possible that I can choose between to keep my old horse or to ride this new one. (I want my lovely simple old horse back).
Is this new thing the biggest mistake in modern history?
I hope the answer is so simple that I’m just a stupid cow (holland). It was my live!!!!!
Love everybody
(though I know the intent was good)
matt this new dashboard is coooolllllllllll, the hardwork u guys doing is very good, luv u alllllll there.
This is really irritating. I’m sure the new features are great and wonderful, but did you have to change the visual appearance of the dashboard? In particular, why did you have to change the colors? I much prefer the colors of the old dashboard.
Please give the user some control over the visual appearance of the dashboard (or at least the color scheme, for God’s sake).
Wow, I feel like tiger in the jungle. The small one, the lost one, but in his environment… Greta!
Awesome Matt, congratulations to everyone who worked in this. It was just completely unexpected to me. Keep it up!!!
This new dashboard does not work as it should…. The widgets text does not work at all!
This you have check..Thanks!
Change is always hard. As others commented, I too was working on a post when this happened. Thought the world of wordpress was coming to a cataclysmic end. Naturally, I’m contacting support (Sorry guys) sending out the alert, assuming the worst.
Initially, I was crushed. I’m new at this and my learning curve these last months was exhausting, but
essential. I was finally beginning to get it down and … well, like I said change is always hard. And breaking those well-worn, timeless routines is like losing a lover. He may not have been the best, but he was comfortably dependable, reliable and there for me. I think this new guy is going to take some time, but he’s already beginning to grow on me. Thanks.
Everything I wanted WordPress to become has now become true! Excellent update that has motivated me even more to write on wordpress. The new Dashboard was kind of a shock but it is very clean, has a nice overview and it is charming.
Excellent work! WordPress can only get better!
When can we expect the reply button on the comments?
I thought I had a virus or something. A little warning would have helped. 🙂
I guess I will get used to it eventually.
