Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.
March Wrap-up
- 298,194 blogs were created.
- 381,855 new users joined.
- 2,242,997 file uploads.
- 3,225,059 posts and 1,420,975 new pages.
- 4,418,407 logins.
- 636,024,114 pageviews on WordPress.com, and another 347,679,330 on self-hosted blogs. (983,703,444 pageviews total across blogs we know about.)
- 863,470 active blogs, where “active” means they got a human visitor.
Not so fond of the “fresh” colour scheme, I associate WordPress with dark blues. Sounds odd, but it’s almost like a brand identity.
The dashboard is actually really useful though, looks great in classic mode. Plus, I like the idea of different colours for individual blogs.
Keep up the good work!
still can’t insert photos…
Matt, this is making me and my semi-popular blog unhappy.
I think I’ll like it once I get used to it. Seems like harder work now to get my photos onto my blog. I wish we didn’t have to save it and then go into the gallery to get it on our blog. It was easier the old way, this new way had a lot more options though. Spell check is being missed but I know it’s broken…but I need it. Like Grace said, it would be nice to be able to customize it in the future. The type is really small and I miss being able to just click on a name to go to the comment, the # sign is kind of small and confusing to click on.
Thanks for the hard work!!!
With the new design I suddenly can’t edit my own comments I make on my own blogg.
This is ridicules!
OK guys I found it. You had to click on your own name on top of the comment to be able to edit your comments. This is not a smart design.
Hate it.
It’s kind of scary, but I’ll adapt to the change. 😀
I like the new dashboard, I only need a wider spanish traslation.
The design is horrible. You’ve taken something that, while archaic in appearance, was fully functional and easy to use, and you’ve made it a jumbled eyesore. Please reconsider this change, or else I may have to drop out of the WordPress camp.
I like the new features, but I wish there was an option to have the old one back, even though I’m used to this one by now. I still think a map would be nice, I keep getting lost in this new dashboard. 😛
I just changed my blog design to Mistylook by Sadish — when I went to fiddle with the widgets, I discovered that the current ones don’t show up under Current Widgets (so I can’t edit them), but show up under Used Widgets. Also, the drop-down menus (chosen previously) are gone from the published blog. The Links box on the published blog looks as though it has been formatted incorrectly. Hope this issue can be resolved soon.
I initially thought that my browser had spazzed or something. Then, I thought that it must be something wrong with the server or something. I didn’t like the new layout-the colors were too light and the layout was messed up. After fiddling with the color scheme, I feel fairly confident that my eyes won’t give out on me but I still don’t really like the layout. I think I should be able to get used to the new layout, but
YOU GOT RID OF MY WORDCOUNT! I LIKED MY WORDCOUNT! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE put the wordcount back. I know you can’t necessarily put the old layout (which I liked better) back, but pppllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssseeeeeeeee put the wordcount back! Please! I seriously enjoyed feeling eloquent because of my ridiculously high wordcount, and now it’s gone? *weeps*
I preferred the old dashboard. But I suppose I’ll get used to this new one now it is a fait accompli.
It doesn’t work well with the Opera browser (Mac version). You cannot upload pictures. I could upload the pictures with Safari, but I still haven’t figured out how to insert them into the post.
Really makes me wonder why you didn’t just leave well enough alone…
There’s a lot more information on this new version, but the layout is not nearly as clean and intuitive. Information is organized in strange ways and the style sheet is pretty ugly. Changing back to the classic format only helps a little. Is there any chance the layout will be tweaked in the future to make it better?
I don’t like change myself, but I’m sure I’ll get used to this. Can’t complain because you guys provide such a great service.
Peace,
I’ll pass comment when I get use to it. How do I get to see the Word Count now?
It’s great and everything…but it erased most of my text widgets…oh well, another two hours or so configuring them.
Thanx a lot.
Wow. I was shocked when I first saw it, but after about 30 seconds I was totally in love with it.
Now if you’ll just add a couple of new templates for me to explore with, I’ll be happy as a clam at high tide…
I thought my computer had gone mad when I first saw the new dashboard, but I love it now. Great upgrade! 🙂 Thanks!
Colors suck. But I guess, we can get used to.
😉
Otherwise, looks interesting (especially the new files upload system).
Problem : when editing a post, the link function doesn’t work : the window appears but stay empty ! (i use the latest version of Firefox).
A bit lost initially, but I realize it’s just resistance to change or whatever… grateful for all the time & work that must’ve gone in this makeover.
Thanks a lot n best regards !
No offense but the old dashboard was waaay better 😦
i agree that i love the new design, but the color scheme on the dashboard is not great
also, i wish there were an easier way to access and see drafts of things im writing like before. But the new design has already made my life easier
I think its nice is all the things in one front page.. I like it a lot.. but well im an order freak 😛
Love it! Thanks!
Thank you, good job
Pepe
What have you done! The new inserting picture is a disaster since it only shows the upper half of the panel and it can not be moved or expanded so you cannot edit or delete images
Boo-hoo. I used the “edit” function for comments a lot. I can’t find it.
I was a little freaked out when I first saw it. (It IS a bit unnerving not to know where anything is.) But it’s starting to grow on me. It’s nice to not have to look at two separate pages to see recent comments and your stats.
Great!!!
Except for the screen space that the categories take. Why?
Nice to see the distinction between ‘categories’ and ‘link categories’!!!
And LOVELY how easy it has become to place widgets on the blogroll!
Well done!
Yours most gratefully,
Sabine
Thank’s for keeping the efforts to make your services even better. I much appreciate it.
;D
My friend (and blog co-founder) just emailed me freaking out, saying that the wp dashboard was gone! Naturally I rushed over here, and was relieved to find that our blog hadn’t been deleted!
Thank you so much! I love the new interface, and though it may take some getting used to, it’s definitely a change for the better. I love the multi-author blog editing thing, that will be VERY helpful.
I do think that the color scheme could be better though. I love the general design though!
I can’t wait for more widget customization options.
Thank you again!
Oasiss (zatetic.wordpress.com)
aaw .. I played new dashboard with wp.org before and it’s so fun.. then I have in wp.com either ..I like it ..
Matt, I just see your new pic, cool … !!
Very Nice!
At first I couldn’t stand it. Everything was much bigger and the layout threw me off. The colors are hideous too. I actually got really upset and was like ‘what was wrong with the original layout?’ But I just wrote my first post in this new design and I loved it! It was so much nicer and smoother and just looks and feels so much more professional! So now I’m sold. I will try to never doubt you guys again.
*applauds* thanks guys!
Guys, I am getting angrier and angrier about your change with inserting pictures. I use a lot of graphs and pictures in my blogg and your change is an utter and total disaster. If you don’t fix this VERY, VERY soon I will close all my accounts with you and move somewhere else.
Don’t you test BEFORE you make a change?????
I just joined and you changed it when I got used to it, lol.
It took a day or two to get used to it but now I really find it easier to use than the old one. Thanks!
nice. love it. thanks
Karen
I like it, but I can’t seem to find how to upload a photograph into my new post!
Eee ow! Don’t like it at all, what happened to ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’? The old version was much better, this one looks very garish.
Totally love the new layout, once you get use to it, it is a lot user friendly and doesn’t jump all over the place when pasting items in or embedding pictures etc. Terrific!
Gargh!?!? Where has spell checker gone? Even the keyboard shortcut listed in the help popup doesn’t work. How will I maintain my learned mystique 😀
I really like the new dashboard page layout. I just wish i was more “blog literate”. I’m still trying to figure out how to do things without totally wrecking everything that’s there. But good job to all involved!
I have a little suggestion. In the WordPress.com spanish version, things that were in spanish, now are in English again. Not a big issue to me, but maybe to other authors can be a problem.
Actually I do like this new, improved template of the dashboard, has new features and all.
See ya!
At first I thought my page didn’t load properly.
Lots of information and features, thanks. After I changed back to the classic colour scheme, I’m still finding the light blue and the smaller font harder on the eyes. There’s too much clutter and the Save button is perilously close to the Delete Post button. What Grace said…at some point, can we customize this view so we can see what we want to see above the fold, reduce the clutter, and improve visibility?
It’s going to take some getting used to but I guess we have no choice. I’m not digging it now but I’m sure I will in a week or so after playing around with it.
I love the new dashboard. It’s been awhile since I have logged in, and what a surprise. A lot more user friendly.
The changeover totally threw me as well as I was in the middle of writing a post and wondered what I had done. Now I am getting used to it I really appreciate the new features and it seems to be working a bit faster – much more user friendly. Great fun to know which are the most visited posts. Thanks Matt!
Just one query (at the moment), please:
Where can I find the code for uploading pictures into my sidebar that used to be found under Uploads > Links, please.
I didnt like it at first but its growing on me,… im gonna have to figure out the gallery thing, that sounds awsome….thanks guys.
Hate it, hate it, hate it.
I realize enough people love it, so it probably won’t be changed back – but I would like the ability to use whichever Dashboard design *I* want.
Having trouble uploading photos – is it me or the new bits…. (I liked the photo bit with the rest of the writing bit…)
I think it looks great. Clean, easy to navigate interface. Pity the image function and links maker don’t work. Can we get those fixed?
To me the new dashboard is not much of an improvement. I am currently on vacation and use my Eee PC to post my entries. The old design required quite some scrolling around and the new one even more.
To make things worse: some things simply don’t work at all with a resolution of 800×480. I wanted to try the new gallery feature, but it is impossible to even upload a photo, since the media upload applet only shows the center portion. Of course I could install Opera to use it’s page scaling feature, but why should I have to?
I guess with the UMPCs becoming available for the masses, you will see more request for a resolution-agnostic user interface.
With the new dashboard, editing the text widgets it’s IMPOSSIBLE for me. The left half of the text edit-box is cut, so I almost can´t see the text.
By the moment:
old design 1 – new design 0
Wondered what was going on at first, thought I had gone somewhere else. It looks great to me !
I did ride the bike and did crusing down the road in no time.
I liked the Dashboard and you deserve my appreciation
samant
Looks better than before but I liked old design.
lol.. the design is very good.. WTF?!
is very cool
“lol.. el diseño es genial.. tiene pinta super!”
thanks for renovating wordpress ñ_ñ
is very cool
I don’t like it. I finally figured out how to change those awful colors back to classic. Now I can’t figure out how to view my blog template like I did before. Instead of the interface it always had, now I have widgets on a separate page and it looks like I can’t move them to where I want to. I click “add text widget” and when I try to edit it or add info, it disappears on me. I ‘ve tried it several times.
It was a shock to me too. At first, I thought I was in a fake site. Now getting used to it, but having trouble making links in my posts — why?
I love it. Thank you for all the new features.
I grew to like it pretty quick. I especially love the enhancements to the Write page.
The biggest gripe I have heard is that a lot of my friends are having problems uploading media just because they are used to looking down below the entry field. They thought this feature had been lost. Don’t worry, they’ll get used to looking up and to the right soon enough.
Also, some people don’t seem to realize that YouTube and Google videos can still be inserted in the exact same way. They think you have to use HTML now. Just sayin’. You may want to edumacate such folks.
There is a “Kitchen Sink” button that drops down an advanced editor bar on the Write page (like before; I just really like the “Kitchen Sink” label). I see a new button (I think) for embedding videos, but I can’t get it to work when I try to use it for a YouTube video, for example. An article explaining this feature would be greatly appreciated. Probably many people would also appreciate an explanation of the other buttons as well, like what actually happens when you click on the little brush.
Anyway, thanks for all your hard work. You’re going to get some flak for a change of this magnitude that most of us were not expecting, but you guys are awesome in your efforts to make this service the state of the art.
And free!!! (Well, I pay for extra storage, but mostly because I don’t want you to starve to death.) I have been using WordPress for over two years to host Innocent Bystanders, and I am a big fan of yours.
Oh by the way, just ignore the jerks who think you should have gotten their consent first, or consulted beta testers, and so forth. It’s your product, it’s free, it’s not cluttered with advertising, and I kinda figure the rest of us should just be appreciative.
I liked the information about top posts, top searches, and so forth. But I think the layout is very ugly and clunky… I hoped it was a transitional thing, and that when I woke up my dashboard would be elegant again. : (
Is there a way to change the date on the new design? If so, I haven’t found it and I need to have that ability. Otherwise, I love the new look.
I HATE THIS I HATE THIS I HATE THIS
I spent about 90 minutes at a friend’s dad’s house getting an image to put with a post about the Bruce Springsteen shows in LA and now I can’t get the image to load!!
I see someone else has this problem; I too am on a MAC but can go to a PC and try there.
PLEASE please please I don’t want this motorcycle–can I have my old rickety bike back? It worked great for me–I don’t need anything too fancy, just something to take me around the block and the world and back.
Thank you.
I tried a few of the recommended “fixes”
Changing to the classic colors doesn’t fix the fact that the second nav bar has zero distinction as a nav bar. It looks like a bunch of words strewn across the top of the white page. You’ve also added a whole new horizontal bar that houses one “button” at the left- Dashboard. Sure there’s stuff on the right but, um, all this stuff was available in the previous interface without sucking up 30 vertical pixels with another horizontal bar.
No offense to Windows users but I really HATE this. The vertical space on computer screens is shrinking as manufacturers foist widescreen screens on us. Less vertical space. And how many tool and task and name and document bars does the average application have? By the time you get to measuring the _actual_ vertical space you can use to write or edit… it’s only half the screen space. You should be looking for ways to _increase_ usable vertical space not reduce it with more horizontal menu bars.
“Right Now” is useless to me as an individual, personal blogger.
Thank goodness the previous blog stats is still there under “see all”
My fix would have been to make _that_ the standard page when I click on dashboard.
“What’s hot” ought to be moved to a “community” page under the dashboard. It’s not part of what I’m doing so why is it in _my_ dashboard.
“Your stuff” looks useful.
But “Your Stuff” makes “recent comments” redundant, and far less useful.
Kill “recent comments”.
“Incoming links” for a personal blog, is wasted space. I’d kill it if I could.
Moreover, if I wanted that info, I’d go to the all stats page. It’s redundant.
Supposedly, it’s more compatible with Safari, but we still don’t get the rich WYSIWYG editor that the old design had when viewed in another browser- like FireFox.
In Mac OS 10.4, Safari 2.0.4, the photo button brings up a grey screen and a progress bar that does NOTHING. ( I let it go for an hour!)
On the Write page, I greatly prefer ancillary items like password, category off to the side, as opposed to taking up vertical space. Now all this is crammed vertically. The entire right column space is rendered useless. Wasted space. This makes NO sense especially in a time when more and more computer monitors are going widescreen (a trend that, itself, makes no sense in a vertically designed web world.)
I greatly preferred the photos below and the text above, I routinely left my browser window open as big as possible so I could easily write and edit text, import and embed images without scrolling anywhere.
The ONLY thing I needed was the “Browse All” photo window would be resizable like the text window was. On numerous browsers, it only showed the top row and then half of the next row down. I had to manually scroll down every time. Also, it would have been nice to have user selection as to how many images are on a page.
As to the multiple user functions- they can be useful but I really don’t see the vast majority of blogs needing multiple people _editing_ the same _existing_ article at _the same time_.
Writing? Then it doesn’t exist for editing someplace else yet.
Published? Then only the editor (or EIC) needs to go back in and make a change.
How many blogs have multiple people trying to edit an existing post at the same time… and how often does it happen?
Multiple image upload- that would be wicked. But the picture thing doesn’t work at all for me.
I’m not dissing the features, but I don’t see why we discarded so much that WORKED for so little “advancement” (saying all those advanced features actually _worked_) I also don’t see why multiple image upload or concurrent article editing protection couldn’t have been enabled underneath the previous interface design. Features / Design. Two separate houses. Adding a new feature doesn’t mean you have to make all the old ones harder to use.
I’m sorry I’m not giving one of the “it’s great” or “luvvin it” simplistic answers.
I figure this is a place to provide honest and detailed feedback so that’s what I’m leaving.
I just hope the new features don’t mean that I’m leaving.

Awesome! Buy the colors could be more attractive!
Oh, and I love the stats box in the middle of the new dashboard. And the top posts and searches listed there. It helps me look at my stats in a new way.
I’m not too fond of it. Is there an option to use the old style?
I hate your new dashboard!!!!!! tried to save a post for later work lost the whole damnn thing, two hours work. hate it why do you keep screwing around with a good thing???
Without a spell checker its essentially useless. Firefox doesn’t like spell checking the post entry box for some reason, so I’m left with no spell check options. Could we not have these ‘updates’?
Very unimpressed.
Okay, I’ve read through the 245 comments and haven’t seen an answer to my biggest problem . . . how the heck do you get back to the main dashboard page once you’ve clicked over into other pages like Manage, Design, or Upgrades? I haven’t been able to get back to the main Dashboard page without having to use the shortcut I have set up on my computer’s deskdop. It’s kind of a pain to have to minimise my browser window and click that shortcut just to get back to the main page.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making the visual editor play a little bit nicer with Safari. I was hating having to use Safari for everything BUT blog editing.
I want the old one back: i cannot insert links and imagers anymore 😦
Could you nog give us a choice between these two options?
Very !!!
Excelente !!!
Yeah, have to say, not at all liking the hassle it is to preview and make edits and changes to my posts via preview before posting. Its not as easy or as smooth as the old design. It won’t show changes I’ve made to the post after the first initial preview. It’ll show in the text editor the changes that I’ve made, but when I click on Preview Post it shows the original text layout that I first put in and not the recent changes. I have to keep clicking “Post” and writing a new post draft each time I want to be able to preview an edit and then I end up with umpteen drafts till I finally post the one that I want. Not only is it a hassle, its extra steps. That doesn’t equate functional streamline. Ok, so the “look” of it the dashboard is streamline, but the “function” isn’t and I’de rather have function of beauty. ~<3
I like the new design but can I change the color?
SLM
It’s very nice, but the color scheme doesn’t really fit with the rest of the site. I miss that relaxing blue. Otherwise, though, good job!
I think that the new look is the Vista of WordPress….disgusting and an eyesore!
i dont like it really
Forgot what I said earlier. It is GREAT! Pictures are so much easier to post!!!!!
Wow! After the initial shock (huge one)…. I’ve been using it for a whole day and getting familiar with it…. and it’s wonderful what you’ve done. It’s sensible and nice, looks modern, specially LOVE the multi-images upload, runs beautifully. I am also very glad of saying good bye to those high contrasted whites and dark blues…. this is much lighter and cleaner and friendlier. Wonderful job! VERY well done to all of you guys!!!! And thank you so much. 😀
It’s make me confusing a bit…
But its okay..
There is a problem with the text on the edit page–
“Post updated. Continue editing below or go back.” It isn’t at all obvious that “go back” is a link to “view site” rather than to go back to an earlier version of the post just edited.
Also, it now takes an extra step to finish edits– the new save button instead of the old “save and continue editing” and “save” buttons means it take two clicks to get out of the edit mode.
Also, you might want to check the moderation queue for this thread– there should be some legit comments stuck there.
i am looking for the post#… ’cause i find that using the post# is the best way to link my post in other sites. example “http://charmedlife.wordpress.com/?p=100” (100 as the post# of an post entry)
with the new dashboard the post# are not visible. i hope somehow this will be visible. i really want that to be visible., so that i can use the post# to link my entries!
other than that, everything seems to have improved! thanks!
Embedding a Youtube video is failing for me right now. It inserts an actual link to the address rather than properly formatting the embed tag. It’s manually fixable, but isn’t working as it should. (Safari 3.1 on a Mac)
Haven’t dug in yet to see if it is browser specific…
This is taking some getting used to. Some aspects are better, a few seem to be a downgrade in usability, but I’ll let it sink in for a week or two before forming a full opinion 🙂
Thanks for continuing to update and improve.
I love it , it’s classy and intuitive.!
Unfortunately whatever you’ve done has messed up my main page. It won’t hold various font/heading sizes. It won’t center or otherwise align. It’s all screwed up. Now I don’t know if I dare make other posts or changes to pages, or posts, because when I did so with the main page, it has totally balked and turned into a mess…. Sorry.
I think the new design is excellent! Keep up the good work 🙂
Change is good. Thanks for all you do! How about a Theme to match the dashboard now? ;o)
