I’m super-excited to announce to you today that WordPress.com now has an official Theme Team. In a nutshell, we’re a bunch of people who really care about WordPress Themes and want to see them get better and better—on WordPress.com and for every WordPress.org user. And yes, that means we’re getting more themes, more often. 🙂
You’ll be hearing more from us individually in the coming weeks but I thought, to get started, it’d be a good idea to share a few of the Theme Team goals we’ve been discussing. Just some rough thoughts really. But I’m hoping that by sharing them here you can get a better idea of what we’re up to—and get as excited as we are about it all.
- Every WordPress.com user should feel like there’s a theme that fits them perfectly, that is exactly how they want to present themselves to the world, that they’re excited to show to their friends.
- We want everyone to feel a sense of momentum and ever-increasing possibilities, and to do so we will present as many perfect-fit WordPress themes to as many WordPress.com users as we can.
- We will ensure all of our public work represents the best in coding practices, web standards, and technical excellence.
- We will craft all of our themes to have a consistent user experience and meet our users expectations and hopes.
- We will teach WordPress developers to become the best theme developers in the world. If you’re a WordPress theme developer—commercial or 100% free—we want to help you be the best.
- We will ensure all our improvements make it back to the open source community.
I love the idea of meeting the “expectations and hopes” of everyone here by delivering to you the best in WordPress themes. Pretty, painless, perfect-fit ones that just plain work.
Keep watch here for more announcements—and more new themes!
WordPress rocks again. Thanks a lot – looking forward to see it all!
Great! I want a cream and red theme…any chance? x
Never static always dynamic…gotta love WordPress.com…thanks for your commitment to us users!
Excellent news – perhaps individually customiseable ones?
Good stuff.
Is it possible for the theme team to do stastistics about theme being used? For example, the 10 most popular ones, or something like that.
Wow! That’d be great! If you don’t mind a suggestion, how about warrior cats?
This is my first day on WordPress and I’m already getting great news. Thanks!
Thank you so much WP… we love you!!!
Great! I am always looking for new themes!
Cool. Thank you. I’m looking forward to see what you create.
Hurrah! New themes means excitement and dynamism.
I just joined and I’m already looking forward to it.
I can’t wait for the new themes… go guys ^o^
I’m stoked! There has been a couple new ones that are great looking and easy UI. This is great news! Thank You so much for your input to the WordPress community!
Its better if WP allows people to use the free themes available on net. I always wonder why there are restrictions to use the other themes. All the Word press blogs looks like clones of each other. 😦
The formation of the Theme Team is part of our dedication to providing more visual options for WordPress.com users in the future.
I’d LOVE a 3 column Tarski. 🙂
Perhaps make editing of CSS cost free?! THAT WOULD BE GREAT! Or maybe allow non-paying users to limited editing of CSS?
How about adding a magnifying glass as a widget. I love the theme I’m using, but the type is TINY! I’m afraid no one’s going to want to read it.
[Clap clap clap!]
Great to hear this. I think I am speaking for many girls here… we sort of miss feminine themes around here: more pink, flowers, maybe some Hello Kitty, a few designer label themes would also be greatly appreciated… overall, most themes keep it very male (minimalist, basic colors, etc). What about some girl power in newer themes? Pretty please?
I’ve always wanted “asides” and the ability to embed videos in the sidebar.
I don’t know if these are theme dependent.
This is Great! Let your minds burst with ideas! Just remember to keep them simple to use with a vast variety of options.
I’m a WYSIWYG person and my mouse is my means of transportation. Clicking . . . no coding. Visual appeal!! “Yes!!”
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Thank you. I simply cannot wait. 🙂
This is awesome news to hear.
I’m new here. Your theme team concept is great. The support group is too unfamiliar for me yet, so i’m adding requests here for customizable headers (which you have now) and at least limited font variations and size buttons.
As an artist – image maker – i’d really like the ability to add my own image(s) as background to my blog pages or even better, page by page with the abity to adjust value/contrast – light/dark of images. Background images create a unique look for any blog – IMO.
I am impressed with the multiple ways in which people can interact here, find and explore blogs and connect with others.
Thank you for this, it was about time and I’m really excited! I’m a creative, baroque kinda girl, and while I’m faithful to WP because of all its other cool features, I have always wished there’d be waaaaay more themes available. I’m not a big lover of all those cool-as-ice and super-narrow themes that prevail on WP.
But now I’m hopeful and excited that we’ll get a lot more variety and more new themes (maybe each month?). This is exactly what WP needed and I’m glad you are tending to this now. You’re already incredible, guys, but WP will be invincible if you can make those themes better and more varied.
Awesome, guys…keep the good work on… 🙂
Yeah… a dedicated WordPress theme team 🙂 Thank you.
I just got a new theme and I love it! Thanks for all of your hard work.
Honestly, this is a BRILLIANT idea!!!
This is great news! I can’t wait to see the results of the creative minds!
Thank you so much! Looking forward to seeing some new themes. 😉
This really is great news. I hoped WordPress would do something like this one day… and they did!
Excellent!
Again you guys have gone beyond what I expected. Thanks.
That’s very nice from you, thank you very much.
BTW, I want to mention something. It’s very difficult to find “wide” themes. 99% of themes are very narrow and they aren’t flexible for educational content. That’s one thing. Another thing to mention is the lack of built-in support for formatting code in a specific language (e.g. C#, Java, etc..)
Have you seen our instructions on posting source code?
I love this idea. I know I’m a real girly girl, and I would love my theme to be filled with flowers and delicate colors, etc.
As an artist, I cannot tell you how much this means to me.
Thanks again, as always.
Terrific! I’d like to request something, as especially this weekend it’s become a real problem. I have a photoblog and would very much like a photoblog format (very large photo capability, but you can scroll down to see previous posts like a normal blog) with custom header. I have a fantastic custom header that’s come to signify my blog where ever I go, but the small photo sizes allowed currently on every theme with a custom header are frustrating.
Thank you!
Cool, I have a suggestion/request for a theme (or maybe a general functionality that could apply to various themes): multi-lingual. I’m currently using different categories to distinguish between posts in different languages because there’s no suck functionality around. Would it be possible to write a theme that designs the layout so that this is easier to do? -Rafael
Thank you. I’m dying for some new themes! Kick Tumblr’s bum.
I would appreciate it if a decent news theme is created. Thanks.
Theme Team,
I must say you all are doing a great great job. I don’t compare, but still the themes here on WordPress are so much more elegant, better, and simply beautiful. The themes make blogging on WordPress better. They make our blogs look good, thats something (actually a lot)!
That’s awesome. I still feel as if there is not a theme that fits my blog and showcases my personality. Won’t you come up with something bubbly and fun?
I would like a background that moves.
WordPress rocks! New themes is way good news for me. I can’t seem to stop creating new blogs because WordPress is so cool.
I’m new to WordPress. I think I will love this!
WordPress is awesome. There’s no need to elaborate.
Still keeping my fingers crossed for the that 3 column black design…hint hint. 🙂
I would prefer to have editable header photographs with the ability to resize the header to accommodate the complete picture. Drop down type menus are a must. Technically, WP is superior, but there are limitations in the themes.
Instead of a method for altering the size of the theme, we provide a cropping tool to help fit your header image into the theme itself. You can try resizing the picture before uploading it to make sure it fits within the header frame.
We’re launching the Theme Team to push our themes to a new level of awesome, and we believe you’ll like what you see.
Lovely!!!! Please, let’s have themes that use excerpts on the home page… and also, an html5 theme would be super great!
Awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing what the team comes up with. 🙂 Thanks for all of your hard work.
Awesome stuff. Good luck.
Great job; thanks.
I wish there was a button on the editor to insert a line break.
You can insert line breaks using the Visual Editor by pressing Shift-Return.
Just one wish for the new themes: customizable header.
Whenever possible, we try to have custom headers available as an option in themes.
♥.♥ I love you guys! You rock!
Hi !
Good Work!
I’d like to encourage and challenge you guys to develop themes targeted for the “prosumer photographer” that can be used by serious amateur photographers to create blog sites that appropriately showcase their photographs. We need WordPress.com themes that are compelling alternatives to dedicated amateur photography sites like Smugmug.com.
I know you can do it, and we really need it. Thanks.
Please have more fonts! Thanks a lot!
We try to deisgn themes using “safe” fonts we’re sure many readers will have, but keep in mind that you can also change the fonts using either a Custom CSS upgrade or the Typekit options in your Appearance menu.
Great news! Can you guys design a camouflage theme? I’m a former Soldier with a milblog, and I’d love to see it.
Gentle people at WordPress….. Muchas Gracias…… Methinks I’ve stepped into something good.
Awesome news!
I beg you: make all new themes right2left ready and compatible with Arabic and Persian languages.
We plan to have all new themes launch with RTL support ready to go and translation strings ready for our translation volunteers to get working.
I love themes! Thank you 🙂
Looks like my wish list has been covered by others….more themes with custom headers, larger custom headers and a way to easily change text size/color/font. I did get lazy and scroll down through some of the posts so if it hasn’t been mentioned more dark themes also! Thanks for all you do…..
What an wonderful Idea… expecting more from the team…. I love WordPress… It’s so good.. 🙂 🙂
I love Vigilance…. I loved the recent Inuit theme too… but it didn’t have a custom header…. try to add the vigilance options in Inuit theme and I am sure it will be better… 🙂
Awesomesauce. Thank you.
Thank you very much. WordPress is already the greatest blogging tool in the internet, and still you guys care about it and try to make it even better. I’m really delighted to know that! thanks!
Great stuff. Please don’t get rid of my Theme. It reminds me of where I use to live in the UK.
Your doing a great job.
¿Como se dice, “BOOYAH”?
As for that “through-the-grapevine” not scheduled, but potential theme cancellation. While it’s been stressed it is not planned, it is also not ruled out as a possibility. As none of us knows which themes a potential cancellation might hit I just wonder: is this purely theoretical? Or is there any reason (such as disk space, compatibility etc.) why anyone would consider retiring a theme? Or would at least incumbent users be allowed to stick to their choice while only new users would not be able to pick the redundant theme at a future stage?
@crisismaven
As mentioned in an earlier comment, we don’t have plans to retire older themes right now—only plans to bring more and more attractive and flexible ones to you.
Thank you for the new theme. I love it! 🙂
I’m behind u!
this is great!=)
Thanks, WP is the best…
As a photographer I prefer themes that don’t leave empty space on the sides of the screen. I want enough room to show text and images without feeling too cramped. Give me room to spread out!
Wonderful! I can’t wait!
That would be awesome if more themes were developed…Of coarse I’m a simpleton at heart and like to keep things simple and to the point…I’m looking forward to seeing the new designs 🙂
I am new to WordPress, but this news has gotten me pretty excited. My ultimate goal is to learn CSS and theme building, but for now, this hits it out of the park for me. Thank you.
Hip hip hooray! It would be great to have more theme options!
Yipee-ki-yay… well, you know the rest if you’re a Bruce Willis fan. This is wonderful news. Perhaps, more black backgrounds with a customized header? Christmas is here early all. Peace.
WordPress already a pretty good assortment, the more themes the better!
Hey, could you make a theme for quilters??? I’d love to have one…
Thank you!
I need a photoblog theme!
Great news ! Love it ! Hope to see more and more themes ! More IT style themes ya!
well, that’s great! hoping to see some exciting new themes
Hi, umm I think this is great, I want one that fits me all the better, like maybe a. . .uh. . .a theme of a gymnast doing tricks and a girl singing maybe and some bright colors.
I would love this theme, Thanks!
woops! It did both of mine!
great, because i just switched to wordpress and i’m liking it, but i just can’t find the template to do all i need.
After struggling to fit my header image to the theme I didn’t really want, because it was the only theme that would even begin to allow my header image to look halfway decent, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
More simple, clear, readable type themes with larger custom header areas, please!
Larger, darker fonts for those of us with strained eyes, please!
Thank you for this initiative. Fabulous idea.
Hi, I am very happy with wordpress.com but want more attractive and interesting themes.
wow this is exciting! i’d love to see more themes! thanks a lot!
I have a problem finding one I love as well. However, I’ve been to most of the other blog hosts, and I am a wordpress blogger til the end. WordPress is just so much better! This is so exciting to hear, and I can’t wait until you do one that fits me! Thank you thank you thank you for caring and working to make us happy!! Again, THANK YOU!
I love this idea…Anything to bring more attention and traffic to my Blog!!

Great news!!!!! I’d love to see a greater variety for those of us with free blogs on WP.
Does more themes also mean more widgets, gizmos and goodies?
Out of interest do you need to purchase anything so that you can upload your own designed themes?
@Buzz Comic UK — Theme uploads are not allowed for WordPress.com blogs, but we do offer a Custom CSS upgrade which allow you to customize any of our themes.
I’m really excited about this news! Thanks so much!
Well, thats a great news, we warmly welcome the new theme team, I want a ‘Football (Soccer)’ theme, beautifully designed, with social networking links, two or three column, dark shaded (green will be good), link from FIFA (built-in), and some other cool features. Hope I’ll get the theme as early as possible. Because the FIFA World Cup 2010 is near, so hurry-up please.
Thank You.
This is exciting news!
Thank you for existing and being awesome.
