I’m super-excited to announce to you today that WordPress.com now has an official Theme Team. In a nutshell, we’re a bunch of people who really care about WordPress Themes and want to see them get better and better—on WordPress.com and for every WordPress.org user. And yes, that means we’re getting more themes, more often. 🙂
You’ll be hearing more from us individually in the coming weeks but I thought, to get started, it’d be a good idea to share a few of the Theme Team goals we’ve been discussing. Just some rough thoughts really. But I’m hoping that by sharing them here you can get a better idea of what we’re up to—and get as excited as we are about it all.
- Every WordPress.com user should feel like there’s a theme that fits them perfectly, that is exactly how they want to present themselves to the world, that they’re excited to show to their friends.
- We want everyone to feel a sense of momentum and ever-increasing possibilities, and to do so we will present as many perfect-fit WordPress themes to as many WordPress.com users as we can.
- We will ensure all of our public work represents the best in coding practices, web standards, and technical excellence.
- We will craft all of our themes to have a consistent user experience and meet our users expectations and hopes.
- We will teach WordPress developers to become the best theme developers in the world. If you’re a WordPress theme developer—commercial or 100% free—we want to help you be the best.
- We will ensure all our improvements make it back to the open source community.
I love the idea of meeting the “expectations and hopes” of everyone here by delivering to you the best in WordPress themes. Pretty, painless, perfect-fit ones that just plain work.
Keep watch here for more announcements—and more new themes!
Thanks for your hard work. I love it.
I want one that looks like an ocean background or water splashing.
love wordpress. Thanks!!!
I would love to see more themes on WP. Looking forward to it. 🙂
great that you’re focusing on this…now all we need is “automatic URL linking” a la gmail and wordpress will be perfect for my needs! keep up the focus…
Woohoo! That’s great!
Fantastic! Custom color and fonts to chose from will be really cool. Thanks guys!
That’s Fantastic!
i’ll wait the fit one. and i believe it will come soon! goog luck and GBU! thanks.
You’ve got to love a group where the author of an article responds to comments. I’m glad I joined WordPress. Great news about new themes. I’m looking forward to them.
Nice idea.
Might I also suggest something for those of us who are not already up to our eyeballs in the whole “Theme Thing”?
In particular, some kind of “basics” guide? (Or a pointer to one if it already exists).
Yeah, I know, “Newby” questions. Though I’ve got several decades professional computer experience, everyone is a Newby on something. So minor things like:
1) If I change theme does it change for all my PAST articles too?
2) If I change theme, can I change back and have nothing having happened?
that kind of thing. So, I picked a theme at the start, and have done nothing since. I don’t know if I’m married to it, or if it’s like last nights TV show… Providing a “start here guide” for themes would be a good thing.
In particular: I’ve found that the theme I’m using ‘right truncates’ tables put in the “preformatted” tags. Other themes don’t. I’d love to swap to a theme just like what I’ve got but with scrollable width on preformatteds. But as near as I can tell I need to try every single theme one at a time to find out how they behave. Where is the canonical description of ALL the behaviours of each theme? There’s more to a choice than the look of the wall paper…
FWIW, I’m using “Mistylook” and I know that “Freshy” does have indefinite width scrollable preformatted boxes. But which other ones do? And do any look like “Mistylook”?
So I’m suggesting a bit more instruction / documentation and README resources on the existing themes along with loading up a new gaggle of them… And if this is all laid out nicely somewhere already, then it’s pretty clear it wasn’t advertised well enough to be noticed by me…
(And yes, I see the nag at the bottom of the page about there being “forums” and “support contact form”. Yet another thing to go exploring on my ‘newby’ list of Things To Do…)
oh god, sweet. i was just making a post about not being satisfied with my theme, and the others i can choose between 🙂
i am waiting for it
Any attractive minimalist themes on the horizon?
Could you add a filter for new themes in the the way you can search by most popular? I would like to check out the newest themes, but I don’t have time to go through the A to Z list to try and figure out which ones are new.
sweet! Keep up the great work!
Yay! thanks, I’ve been wanting more themes!
Will there be more themes with flexible widths?
I could find a theme that would fit me if you’d be nice and make customizing your CSS free!
I mean really, if it weren’t for one or two other things I would be moving to blogger… but I like the tracking.
Also, more photography themed blogs would make the photog world SO happy.
Integration is like a painting in which every part is extremely valuable then only it would catch One’s eyes! I think I am falling in love with WP.com.
I would really love to see a theme that caters to people with video projects. Something that allows videos to always be featured toward the top of the welcome page. I know a lot of people (filmmakers, podcasters, video bloggers) would would LOVE that.
I love the idea of a new Theme Team! 🙂 I hope some of the themes will allow for a feature/customization that I’ve been longing for. I want my main blog page to only have partial entries. I want people to have to click on entries. That would make it easier for me to know what blog entries are most popular. As of now, if someone goes to my main page they can read a few blog entries and I don’t know which ones are the most popular.
Well we do need some art-cum-article theme… wherein it’s easier to display art as a picture slideshow on top and articles following downwords… This theme could be with vibrant colours or sombre earthy shades.

My order please:
1) Dark/purple coloured theme, slight twinkle on the header, photo-friendly, left or right side widget bar, title category tag comments on the top of post and ratings on the bottom. 🙂
2) Sunset themed – range of orange/red colours, photo-friendly.
Lastly, I’m a major supporter of WordPress cuz i know there are people behind the curtains who are constantly working on this. Unlike Blogger which has had some issues and other weblog sites… 🙂 I’m a WordPress fan.
Oh! You should make a WordPress fan badge which we can put on our other websites.
SWEET!! W2G!
Personally I would love to see more themes for photo blogs. For a while now, only 3 or 4 are available. Photographers love black backgrounds – environments that make their photos pop. Keep up the good work!!!
Hello Theme Team, I am glad I found my way back to the WordPress. I enjoy it more than ever. I find it very useful especially that many of my friends are far and away from home. If you want to know what happened with my first WordPress blog, please click the ABOUT in my blog. Thanks.
It’s the best news of the week !!!
You know what I would loooooooooooooooooooove? It’s a theme with a content slider !
And a new theme that doesn’t cut off the pictures when I try to move. It’s the reason I still have the same theme for years …
If you can do that you will be my heroes !!!
Thanks Ryan Markel and I see my answerer got all messed up on the reply to my question regarding entering line break while using the editor. Any way I appreciated very much and thanks.
I’m excited! I’d would like them to be more user friendly when expressing our own designs!!
Let me tell you—I have another blog on IWeb and can’t stand it. So you guys rock! The picture quality on WordPress is superior to what I post to IWeb. Look forward to seeing the new themes and how they will improve my blog. Thank you.
I’m quite excited about this piece of news. Congrats to the Theme Team! Integral feature for WordPress could use a team to keep it dynamic.
A suggestion for a theme. I know a lot of artists are using inexibit™ to display their work. Is there a chance that anybody out there could develop a theme with similar features? I don’t want to switch to inexibit.
This is great, I would love to see more and more better themes in WP. If you guys allow JavaScript and Flash support in addition to this, there will be nothing like it.
Please have some themes for photographers. Thanks!
Hi there, I recommend browsing the themes that are one-column, which allows for much larger photos. Here is more info on how to change your theme.
I really like my pressrow theme, but I would like to be able to add words to the header. Is this a possibility? A few words such as “Photo by . . .” perhaps.
Hi Phyllis, yes, you can add the “Photo by” words, but you must do it on your own imaging software first, then upload it to the custom header. If you need more help, feel free to contact Support.
Thank you WordPress. Hopefully there will be some improvement in themes where the theme team asks the user what they really want in a theme so that the theme will suit them well.
We need more color! Something like the “Rounded” theme but with better workability.
And widget bars along the right side and bottom!
And and and… I love you guys. 🙂 Thank you for working so hard to make it even more awesome around here.
It’s been kinda hard to find one that fits what I want. I have a very good theme but I want things different, I haven’t found it yet. =/ So frustrated. For me, WordPress is the best! But it needs more themes… urgently!!!
Good news, because I really was getting antsier everyday waiting for the right theme to finally come out. hmm…
Sounds good. I love my current layout/theme – just wish it came with a tag cloud!
Excellent. I’ve been looking to replace my Redoable Lite but I can’t find a theme that has 655 px wide images and has a customizable header as well.
I hope you guys come up with something soon.
Awesome! I can’t stand anymore these awfuly bland and idiotic themes.
It’s Wonderful! Thanks a lot.
Yes please! This is awesome! Thank you!
Oh I’d love to be able to have sub pages I can post to, not just the static pages! And the ability to add a retweet button to our posts on WordPress.com.
Yes… Great news. Thank you. 🙂 I’ll use.
Nice! Can’t wait to see them. I need a theme that reflects my web site. Just haven’t found the right one yet!
Great! Will there be options for font sizes ? I am a newish user and not proficient in CSS or HTML- Thanks you guys do provide a lot for being free
Cool! it would be good to have more variable-width themes with custom headers; there was only one last time I looked.
can’t wait to see the next theme..
i hope it will be more attractive and nice
I’m excited!!!!!!
This is great to hear. I LOVE WP, but the fact that most themes are so colorless and just boring are a big sore point for me. I hope to see more colorful & flexible themes soon!
(^^^)
Awesome news!!! I wish we could also get more and better widgets.
this is awesome….!!!!!!! great news…… Love u WordPress…….
More themes?? Oh great, hope that you get some sports, movie, music themes. Would be very nice addition to WP.
Can we have more Pink theme too! hahahah
This sounds very interesting as I am new to blogging. I would like to have a theme. I really enjoy the chance to express myself in a new way. Keep sending great information.
People use blogs for all different reasons…I think a survey to what is used the most and then take maybe the top 5 and make more themes behind those…this will give people more choices…people love to have lot of choices…
That sounds good! I’m looking for a theme which enables the readers to easily browse around, without too much background graphs, pictures etc. I hope to find the perfect one soon.
I have already started liking WordPress.com..
Great news, Please think over including some Serious and Professional Themes as well..
Cheers,
It would be great if there’s a theme that includes image slide show/photoblog as part of the design ^^
Such good news!
I would love to see some themes that are useful to those of is who use the blog as a secondary function (but use our wordpress sites primarily as an “ordinary” website for information).
Oh great! 😀 I so wish for a kind of victorian-style theme… Or a really old book with filthy pages or something like that. ^^ It would be great if there would be something like that in future. 🙂
But you already do so much for all the users, I don’t know if I even have the right to demand something…^^;
Congratulations on being part of the team! Looking forward to new themes.
Fantastic news. I’ve just recently come across wordpress but i’m already feeling like a part of something big. Nice to see special attention being given to what many consider an important aspect of the site.
When????????????????? and more custom backgrounds!
Ian,
I’m in love with one of the themes and the only thing it’s missing is the option to add your own photo for the header (or make it your title)
is there anything you can do?
Everyone say ‘Thank you Theme Team’!!!
Absolutely awesome! Exactly something that a design freak like me would have wanted! 🙂
Thank you there should be more customizable themes on WordPress. That should include at least custom-header custom-colors, fixed or not fixed-width.
Thanks again and I’m waiting for the new themes already !
I would really love to see more customizable themes and headers and more options for creative widgets on the sidebars. These would REALLY help! Thank you!
This news is very good news.
I can’t wait for more themes that give you a large customizable header that doesn’t repeat the name above it. (like Cutline does)
