You can cancel a purchase or renewal and claim your refund yourself from your account, without contacting support. This guide explains the WordPress.com refund policy, refund periods, and how long a refund takes to arrive.
Canceling a subscription does not issue a refund on its own. Canceling stops future renewals, and your subscription stays active until its expiry date. To get your money back, complete all the steps below, including the removal step. Learn more about canceling or removing a subscription.
To refund a purchase or renewal, take the following steps:
- Hover over your name at the top right corner of any screen while logged in to WordPress.com.
- Select the “My WordPress.com account“ button:

- In the left sidebar, select Billing.
- Select “Active upgrades”:

- Click the purchase or renewal you want to cancel or refund.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Cancel in the “Cancel subscription” section.
- On the next screen, a notice at the top tells you whether you are eligible for a refund and how much you will receive. Select “Remove plan and claim refund”:

- Click the “Continue removal” button. This removes the purchase immediately and refunds the eligible amount.

If the notice does not appear, your purchase is outside its refund period. You can still remove the subscription to end it immediately, but you will not receive a refund.
If you are not sure which purchase a charge relates to, search your billing history by site name or product name. You can also match the transaction code on your bank statement to a WordPress.com purchase.
If you can’t log in, you can recover your account in these ways:
- Learn how to reset your password.
- If you can’t reset your password, learn how to verify your account ownership.
- Get help with a recent charge you don’t recognize.
After processing, refunds usually take about seven to ten business days to appear on your bank or credit card statement. International refunds may take longer to reach you. Your bank can tell you when to expect the refund and how it will be listed on your statement.
You will see a record of the refund immediately in your WordPress.com billing history.
In a small number of cases, your bank reverses the original charge instead of refunding it. The payment then disappears from your bank account after a few days, as if the transaction never happened, instead of showing as a refund credit.
You will receive your refund through the same payment method you used when you purchased the subscription, service, or add-on. You can view your billing history to get a copy of the refund receipt. If the payment method you used has been canceled or closed, contact your bank or financial institution to ask how to access the funds.
In most cases, you receive a full refund as long as you claim it within the refund period for your purchase type.
You may receive a partial refund if you made multiple purchases and not all purchases are eligible to be refunded. For example, if you purchased a plan and a domain and claimed a refund after 5 days, you would receive a refund for the plan but not the domain. The final refund amount would be the full cost of the plan, with no refund for the domain.
Refunds are not prorated. If you purchased a 12-month plan and canceled it after nine months, you would not receive a refund for the remaining three months. You would receive a full refund within the refund period, or no refund outside the refund period.
Each purchase type has its own refund period, unless applicable law provides otherwise. If you have questions or issues about your refund, contact support.

Domain name registrations and renewals are refundable if the domain name is canceled within 96 hours (4 days) from when the domain name was registered or renewed. Please note the cautions regarding canceling a domain name before proceeding.
If you register a free domain name with your plan and request a refund after the 96-hour domain refund period, we will credit the difference between the cost of the plan and the cost of the domain name. You will keep the domain name and can use it elsewhere, or cancel it so it won’t be renewed next year.
When your domain name renews, an additional year is added to the domain’s expiry date. It is not possible to reverse the renewal while still keeping the domain name. You must cancel the domain name to be eligible for a refund within 96 hours of renewal.
Additional years/multi-year renewals within the same year are non-refundable. If a domain name renewed multiple years successively is canceled, only the latest year’s renewal cost is refundable.
Domain name transfers are non-refundable unless the process is canceled before the transfer is completed. Note that once a domain name transfer is in progress, it can no longer be canceled or refunded unless the transfer process fails.
The redemption fee (US$80) for expired domains is non-refundable unless the redemption process fails to redeem the domain. Learn more about what happens to expired domain names here.
