  That could be a way to contact them. There is no guarantee that they would get the message or reply though.

  Yea, maybe he died. I want to suggest a new practice: if there wasn’t any activity from someone in the past, last log in was more than 1 year, so you will send to him an e-mail (on demand from new users which are wanted to obtain his @username). If no answer to WordPress’ support in 1 month, so you will automatically free that @username. Just suggestion.
