I own a domain name through blogger (google powered blog) and I want to map it to wordpress. How do I transfer my blog content to my new website?

    Hello,

I own a domain name through blogger (google powered blog) and I want to map it to wordpress

If you already own a domain you can ‘map’ it to your WordPress.com site with Domain Mapping:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan, such as the Personal plan. Each paid plan includes a free domain credit which you can use to map a domain you already own (or register a new one).

How do I transfer my blog content to my new website?

This guide explains how to move from Blogger to WordPress.com:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-blogger/

Come back to me if you have any questions!

Thank you so much! I just want to make sure I understand correctly:
    1. Download blog content from blogger.
    2. Buy premium and map it. (I can still use http://www.wordsfromatraveler.com)
    3. Transfer content to wordpress

I’m slightly confused. When I map it, I can re-design the site on wordpress, correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

    1. Download blog content from blogger.

Yes that’s correct. You will need to export your content from Blogger to an .xml file.

    2. Buy premium and map it. (I can still use http://www.wordsfromatraveler.com)

Yes, you will need Domain Mapping in order to use wordsfromatraveler.com on your site. If you don’t need all the features of the Premium plan, the Personal plan will work too. Add the Personal plan to your cart first otherwise it will select Premium.

WordPress.com removes the www from the URL. All URLs are redirected to the same URL without the www. So in this your URL will be http://wordsfromatraveler.com.

    3. Transfer content to wordpress

Correct. You can import the .xml file from Blogger into your site using our Blogger importer. I’d recommend keeping your other site online until your content has been imported in your WordPress.com site.

I’m slightly confused. When I map it, I can re-design the site on wordpress, correct?

You can choose a theme and design your site whenever you are ready — the domain can be mapped at any time. Domain mapping will not affect the content you have added to your site.

    I hope this helps.

    Gemma,

This helps so much! Thank you! I am working now to back up my blog from http://www.wordsfromatraveler.com; however it’s not downloading/saving to my computer. I think it’s a Blogger issue so am trying to contact them. If I should encounter any further issues as I import the blog on WordPress I will let you know. You’ve been so prompt and helpful with your response, I really appreciate it.

I don’t understand what I did. Please help!

And when I go to my home screen it says I need to upgrade?? I already paid for Premium.

  • Unknown's avatar

It looks like I have two sites now?

The site title: wordsfromatraveler.wordpress.com should be premium and mapped to http://www.wordsfromatraveler.com and the other wordsfromatravelercom.wordpress.com should be deleted.

I am so confused. Also I cannot access the tools section to import my blog from blogger.

    Hi Megan,

It looks like I have two sites now?

    Yes, your account is showing:

    1. wordsfromatraveler.wordpress.com
    2. wordsfromatravelercom.wordpress.com

Your domain (wordsfromatraveler.com) is mapped to wordsfromatravelercom.wordpress.com. The next step in the domain mapping process is to update your DNS settings:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/#2-ask-your-domain-provider-to-update-your-dns-settings

Once you’ve made the change it can up to 72 hours for the settings to fully update.

Also I cannot access the tools section to import my blog from blogger.

This link will take you to where you need to go — there is a Blogger option at the top of the page:

    https://wordsfromatravelercom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/import.php

Let me know how you get on.

    HI Gemma!

Thank you so much for your reply. How do I fix this?

The site title: wordsfromatraveler.wordpress.com should be premium and mapped to http://www.wordsfromatraveler.com and the other wordsfromatravelercom.wordpress.com should be deleted.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Gemma,

Sorry to bother. I just transferred wordsfromatravelercom to wordsfromatraveler1 and deleted it, if I understand correctly the premium is still in place. :)

I’m waiting on the import to load now. :)

Really appreciate your patience and assistance.

I’m working on the DNS, do I email the Blogger support line? Just to clarify, I would ask that my domain be redirected to
    wordsfromatraveler1.wordpress.com ?

    Hi Megan,

I just transferred wordsfromatravelercom to wordsfromatraveler1 and deleted it, if I understand correctly the premium is still in place. :)

Yes, wordsfromatraveler1.wordpress.com has a Premium plan with domain mapping for wordsfromatraveler.com.

I can’t see anything that has been deleted, did you want to delete wordsfromatraveler.wordpress.com?

I’m working on the DNS, do I email the Blogger support line?

Your domain looks like it was registered through Google, so you will need to contact Google Domains instead of Blogger. There is a sample email you can send them on this page (in the grey box):

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/#2-ask-your-domain-provider-to-update-your-dns-settings

Doing so will point your nameservers to WordPress.com (instead of Blogger). Let me know when Google have updated the nameservers and I’ll give you a link to the last step.

    Helping is no bother :)

    Hi Gemma!

I have contacted google domains and inputed the name servers to WordPress.

    What is the next step?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Gemma,

Please help. I accidentally published my website and it’s a disaster. I didn’t customize it at all and I deleted the homepage. I don’t know how to temporarily disable my website/blog.

    Thank you!

    Hi Megan,

I have contacted google domains and inputed the name servers to WordPress.

I’ve visited your site and the domain mapping is working as expected:

    https://wordsfromatraveler.com/

I accidentally published my website and it’s a disaster. I didn’t customize it at all and I deleted the homepage.

It looks like you may have got this sorted out now. Your home page has content and is looking good :)

I don’t know how to temporarily disable my website/blog.

The site can be set to private on your Settings page. Scroll down to the Privacy section and select ‘Private’. Once the change has been saved, only you will be able to see the site.

If you need help with anything, just let me know and I’ll take a look.

    Hi Gemma,

I’m having trouble organizing my blog.

If you take a look I have menu items entitled Home- Blog- Fine Food,Wine, and Coffee- About- Contact

I want the Fine Food, Wine, and Coffee to be like a second Blog for food posts, not just my travel stories. I also want to categorize the reviews by place i.e. Shanghai or Cafes

In my Blog I also want to categorize my posts by continent and then a drop down per country.

I have the exact visual, but I am getting tangled with all the terms and menu items etc.

Any guidance would be most appreciated. I know it will take a bit to reorganize my travel posts, but it’s work I’m willing to put forth. I want to get rid of the random categories I had as “labels” on Blogger and start fresh with more appropriate tags/categories.

    Thank you Gemma!

    Hi there,

I want the Fine Food, Wine, and Coffee to be like a second Blog for food posts

It sounds like you want each of these categories added to your menu. You can do so using these instructions:

    Menus

In Menus, click ‘Add Items’ and you will see the option to add a link to a category. Once you have saved the menu, clicking the link will display all posts in that category.

In my Blog I also want to categorize my posts by continent and then a drop down per country.

I think the best way to do this would be to create more categories for continents and countries — and add these to the menu in the way I mentioned above. I’ve made an example screenshot showing how you would create a drop down menu:

    https://cloudup.com/cAtz8R2VTdY

‘Country’ is a custom link to your blog page and the categories are nested underneath — dragging them underneath will create the dropdown menu.

Let me know how you get on.
