HELP! When will my domain name be released?

    I am currently trying to set up a new domain using another provider, so I wanted to delete my old site here on WordPress completely. I checked into transferring it to another registrar, but there was no email address listed and everything was quite confusing, so as I wanted to just start with a clean slate, I went ahead and cancelled renewal for my domain, then deleted the domain, and finally deleted my WordPress site. Now it looks like the domain is not available for me to use anywhere else, either – so I may have gotten in over my head. My question is … when does a cancelled domain become available? It hadn’t expired; it was perfectly active.

    Hi there,

    We don’t recommend cancelling a domain as there is no guarantee you will get it back again.

    If you want to transfer the domain to another registrar, I can try to recover it for you. I would need to send you a payment request for the domain cost ($18). Once that has been paid I can contact our domain registrar. We will need to do this quickly because if the domain goes into the redemption period, you will need to pay an $80 fee in addition to the domain costs.

    As you have already deleted your site, you would need to create another one for me to assign the domain to. The domain can them be transferred to another registrar.

    If you decide not to recover the domain, you can try to purchase it again once it has been released — providing someone else doesn’t purchase it first. The timescale varies so I’m unable to get you an exact date.

    Yes that’s correct! Please create the site in the account you are currently logged in to (newlighteducation) :)

    I have paid for the domain and received a confirmation email that it was successful, but the domain is not showing up in My Site –> Domains. What would be the next step to remedy this?

    Thanks for your payment. I’ve just contacted our registrar and will let you know when I have an update — we usually hear back in 1-2 days. The domain won’t be visible in your account until it has been recovered though.

    In the meantime, there is nothing else you need to do :)

    Hi gemmacevans!

    I had a couple more questions, if you don’t mind. As I mentioned in my initial post, I am needing to be able to use this domain on another hosting provider; I am using Bluehost. Could you just maybe point me to a how-to article about that so I know a little bit of what I’m doing? I’m kinda new to this whole thing. Thanks!!

    Also … if transferring this domain to another registrar is by any chance what we are talking about, I am hoping that the 60-day limit under which I can nothing (if I understand right) wouldn’t be an issue here? I’m trying to beat the clock with making my website in the next day or so, so time is of the essence.

    Hi there,

    I’ve added the domain to newlighteducation.wordpress.com, you can now begin the transfer using these instructions:

    I am hoping that the 60-day limit under which I can nothing (if I understand right) wouldn’t be an issue here?

    In this case the 60 day lock won’t be a problem. That applies to newly registered domains or those where the contact information has recently been updated.

    I’m trying to beat the clock with making my website in the next day or so, so time is of the essence.

    After the transfer has initiated and confirmed, it can take up to 5 days to complete — just so you know.

    Hello again, gemmacevans …

    Looks like I will need your expert help once again! I contacted Bluehost support but haven’t had much luck with a response yet. When I try to start the transfer, it tells me that the transfer code has been sent to the email address on file, but I’m not getting any email coming through successfully. When I go to Contacts & Privacy to see which email address is registered, it gives me this message:

    “This domain is currently using Privacy Protection to keep your information from showing up in public record searches. If you need to make a change to your domain’s contact info, please contact support.”

    What should I do for this? :)

    I’ve disabled privacy on the domain for you — you shouldn’t see that message again now.

    Thanks so much! I have gotten past that step now, and can see my contact info. But the puzzling thing is that the email address registered on my account is the primary one I always check, and nothing has come through at all, even in the SPAM folder. :( What’s up with that, I wonder?

    One very last question (I hope!) – it might be a bit far out there, but maybe you have an idea about it. In preparation for the transfer, Bluehost is asking me to update my DNS servers on WordPress with Bluehost server info as this will reduce “down time” as the domain is being transferred. There are some problems with their DNS info and WordPress isn’t able to validate their DNS. Anyway – my question is this: is it very necessary to input these fields, or can I proceed with the transfer just fine without them?
