How can I reclaim a domain name?
-
I need to reclaim http://www.ouryellowdoor.com. I registered for it earlier in the day, but deleted it because I decided that I wanted to be hosted through wordpress.org. I attempted to set up a wordpress.org blog through BlueHost, and was unable to claim http://www.ouryellowdoor.com. Going to that address gives me the “Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.” Error message.
Please help!

Hi there!
I’m more than happy to attempt to retrieve your domain for you.
So that you know for the future, when you cancel a domain you completely give up ownership of the domain. There is no guarantee the domain will become available to re-register after cancellation.
There is a 60 day lock on all newly registered domains, but once that period is passed, you’re free to transfer your domain to another host.
I’ve requested the retrieval of your domain. I’ll let you know if the retrieval is successful.
Let me know if there’s anything I can help with in the meantime!

Hi there!
Not yet. We probably won’t hear back about the domain until Monday. I’ll let you know as soon as I have an update.
-
Shawna –
Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate it very much!
What is the status of the domain retrieval? I would like to transfer the domain to BlueHost/WordPress.org…will I be able to do that immediately or do I have to wait until the 60 days are up?
-
Hello!
There’s still no update on the domain since it’s the weekend.
If we’re able to retrieve the domain, you’ll need to wait 60 days before you can transfer it to BlueHost. This is a mandatory waiting period that will occur every time the contact information for the domain is changed.
-
Is there a way to sort of “un-do” the domain instead of retrieving it? That way it is free for me to register it on BlueHost right away, instead of having to wait 60 days?
Thank you so much for your help. I’m not sure what I did to mess up the domain, but I really appreciate you helping me fix it!

Unfortunately, there’s no way to ‘un-do’ the domain registration.
Domains are a bit tricky and there are lots of rules, and regulations, and procedures in place to make sure that people don’t lose their domains. Often times, domains that have been purchased previously will be bought through auction or backorder before they’re made available again, so its always a good idea to keep a domain you want to continue using in good standing and not cancel it or allow it to expire or lapse.
Transferring domains between registrars is pretty simple and will only take a couple of days once the transfer lock is released. This lock is mandated by the registrar and we have no control over it.
Let me know if you have any other questions about this process!

Hi there!
I haven’t heard back from the registrar about the retrieval yet. I was hoping to hear back today, but they likely had a backlog from the weekend to get through.
There’s no way to fully delete the domain from the registrar without it going through the cancellation process and possibly not being made available again.

Gotcha – ok, then I shall just play it safe!! Thanks for the update – I appreciate it!!
Also, I don’t know if you can help with this or not, but my refund has not yet been processed from canceling my Premium membership. My PayPal account says the refund has been processed, but it hasn’t shown up in my bank account yet. Should I just wait?
Thank you so much for your help!

It can take up to a week for a refund to fully process and appear on your bank statement. Since you cancelled the Premium plan on June 21, I would say give it a couple more days. You should see it on your account soon. :)

Hey Shawna! Just checking in again on the status of things…I would really like to get this ironed out today.
I appreciate all your help! Thanks for asking all my questions, too!

As always happens, I got the email confirming the retrieval of your domain right after I logged off last night. (Literally two minutes!)
I’ve just reset your Domain subscriptions and everything should be working correctly within a couple of hours if it isn’t already. Since it took so long to get your domain reactivated, consider this registration on us.
You can change your name servers to point to your new host by following this guide:
And once your domain is 60 days old, you’ll be able to transfer it to another host by following these directions:
Let me know if I can help with anything else! :)
