Hi Thomas,
To use your domain name at WordPress.com, you will need to map your domain to your site here. We have a full guide to Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping) that walks through the steps to set that up.
There are two main parts to that process:
You will need to update your domain’s name servers to the following:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
That change needs to made at HostGator. We can’t make that change for you, so you can follow HostGator’s guide to Changing Name Servers or contact HostGator for help with that step.
The other part of the process is to add the domain to your site from the Domains page. That will link your domain to your site, so once your domain is pointed to WordPress.com (by updating its name servers) your site will appear there.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

I understand I can map my WordPress.com blog to a domain of my own for $13, but when following those steps, it seems necessary for me to pay the $13 before I can be walked through the steps to set that up.
I remember HostGator telling me that they don’t know which of the nameservers my blog is on, that only WordPress can tell them that, and they need that information before they can make that change for me, and that I should talk to WordPress on the phone to get that straight. Is there a WordPress phone # you can recommend me to call for that purpose?
Since I’ve already paid HostGator for the domain name, is it not possible for me to get all this straight without paying $13 for the Domain Mapping Service?

Hi Thomas,
The WordPress.com name servers are these:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
You can provide those name servers to HostGator so they can update your domain name for you, or you can follow their guide to Changing Name Servers to enter those name servers.
That name server change is what will point your domain to WordPress.com, and the domain mapping upgrade here at WordPress.com will link your domain directly to your blog. (That’s the way to link a domain you’ve purchased elsewhere with your WordPress.com blog.)
WordPress.com doesn’t have phone support, but I’m happy to continue helping you with that here. Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

Hi I was on the phone with HostGator for maybe one hour trying to Update my domain’s name servers, and after much trial and error, the support guy just gave me 2 servers and IP addresses that he says you will need on your end in order to use my domain name at wordpress.com. I can send you those here, but is it advisable to do that here in a public forum?

I will say, I should not have taken the advice of a book I bought which recommended I use HostGator for Webhosting. I think WordPress is perfectly capable of that, am I right? Following that book’s advice has really caused me to lose a lot of time correcting this mistake. So I hope that we can resolve this soon. How should I best send you the name servers and IP addresses that HG tells me that you will need in order to use my domain name at wordpress.com? Is it a bad idea to send it to you here? Should we create a 3rd support ticket set to “private”?

Hi Thomas,
Name servers aren’t private information, so you’re safe sharing those here. However, I’m not sure why HostGator support gave you that information — those would only be useful if you had purchased a domain from WordPress.com and wanted to use that domain with HostGator hosting.
My understanding is that you purchased a domain from HostGator and want to use it with your WordPress.com site. Is that right?
In that case, the change you’ll need to make is in the domain settings for the domain you purchased from HostGator. That change is made at HostGator (not here at WordPress.com) since that’s where the domain is registered and where its settings are controlled.
Here’s a message you can send (or relay on the phone) to HostGator support about that:
I would like to use the domain I purchased at HostGator with a WordPress.com site. In order to do this, I need to point my domain’s name servers to the following:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Can you please update my domain to use those name servers?
Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

That is exactly what I told them on the phone. They made several unsuccessful attempts to update my domain name, then told me to tell you the following servers and ISPs and that you could do it. He said something about a “back door” or something. Anyway, this is the information the guy on the phone (he hung up or we somehow got disconnected) told me to give you, and he told me that you could do it from your end:
ns8443.hostgator.com 216.172.184.216
ns8444.hostgator.com 216.172.184.217He said those are the 2 servers that you need.
As for me, I’m a bit confused and exasperated at this point.

And yes, you are correct, I purchased a domain from HostGator and want to use it with my WordPress.com site. I was on the phone and my computer with the guy for an hour or more and he/we were unable to locate the name servers. So he finally gave me the above servers and ISPs and told me to give them to you.

Hi Thomas,
This is getting pretty weird! Can you tell me the domain name you’re trying to use here at WordPress.com? I’d like to see if there’s anything more I can do from my end to help you get that working here, and I realized I hadn’t asked you for the domain name itself yet. Once I have that I can do a bit more investigation to try to clear this up for you.

Thanks, Thomas. I just made sure everything is ready on this end for that domain to be pointed to WordPress.com, but the name server change itself has to happen with HostGator.
Can you contact HostGator once more, let them know we have a zone record ready for your domain, and ask if they need us to do anything more to prepare to point your domain here? These are the name servers your domain needs:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Or you can give it a try following their guide here:
Please let me know what you find out from them!
-
HostGator initially told me today to log into my billing account with them, and to go to a page that doesn’t display the servers.
Then the support guy told me that he had adjusted something (what, I know not) and that in a few hours I can make the updates.
So, I’m waiting a few hours, then will try again.
I sure hope this HG support guy was right, because the other ones were not!
