I bought a domain name at HostGator, and I want to use it at WordPress
-
Okay. They were finally able to get me the link to make the change I wanted. I changed the name servers and now it looks like this:
Name Servers:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMThis change seems promising to me, though I may have to wait 24-48 hours for everything to go through?
Are you able to verify from your end that I am good to go?
-
Success! I finally got what I wanted with my domain name, at least the first step.
Now, security. How do I know that I have the latest WordPress version?
Also, what advice can you give me to help protect my new site?
-
What I really want is a secure site, one that I can update as soon as updates are available. How do I do this?

Hi Thomas,
I’m so glad the domain name is sorted out now! Everything looks good from my end.
Now, security. How do I know that I have the latest WordPress version?
Also, what advice can you give me to help protect my new site?
WordPress.com takes care of all updates for you, keeping everything up to date and secure so you don’t have to. :) That’s one of the benefits of hosting your site on WordPress.com, versus installing the software from WordPress.org on another host (where you’d have to take measures to update and secure the site yourself).
Also, can I change my username without messing up my account?
Sure thing! Keep in mind that if you change your username you won’t be able to switch back to the old username later on, so only change it if you’re sure. You can change your username by entering a new username under “Username” in your account settings.
Please let me know if I can do anything more to help!

You’ve been very helpful, thank you.
It is good to know, or have reassurance from you, that WordPress.com takes care of all updates for me, keeping everything up to date and secure so I don’t have to.
I almost set up my domain name with WordPress.com to begin with, but then I second guessed myself and bought a book that instructed me to use another host. I wish I had just gone with my first instinct.
In any case thanks for all your help getting me back on track.

You’re very welcome! If I can do anything more to help you out, just let me know. :)
And if you ever decide later on that you do want to use WordPress with another host, that’s always an option. We have a page that outlines the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org in case you ever want to explore that.
