Need to delete account but no longer have associated email

Hello,
I have a very old account that I have sporadically tried to get help deleting over the past few years.

The problem is I no longer have the email account I used to set it up – it was a university email that was deactivated. So I have no way to log in to take care of this problem.
I have been told repeatedly by WordPress that since I no longer have the email to log in, I cannot delete it. But now I’m at the point where I cannot have this site online any more, as it’s detrimental to my career, and need to delete it. I don’t believe that I can’t do so because of the log in issue. Can someone please help me delete it?

You may not have access to the email associated with the site, but do you still have the password? If so you can log in with your username for that site (which logically enough appears to be heatherlsomerville) and the password.

Afraid I don’t have the password. And I can’t reset the password because I don’t have access to the email account listed with the site.

I don’t have an answer for you I’m afraid. Passwords are so important. I have a diary with 58 different passwords that I need to use regularly to access various sites, banks, Govnt departments etc at work not counting all my personal ones. The password recovery email always goes to the email that was associated with the site. If the site ever had any upgrade in the past then recovery is also possible with a transaction ID or Activation URL. https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/
With a free site you have reached a Catch 22 scenario. To anyone else seeing this thread remember to update your email on any WordPress.com site when necessary, especially if it’s one you don’t use regularly. Better still, if you’ve moved on, then delete your site or at least delete any visible personal info, or set it to Private whilst you still remember how to reach it. -

Generally speaking, there shouldn’t be a need to but it might be a good idea if @hsomerville’s email provider has an aggressive spam filter.

Oh sorry, I think I might need a cuppa too! :) We don’t currently have any whilelisted email addresses but it could be useful so I’ll put the idea forward.
