The exported XML file is invalid
-
When I export my blog to an XML file to import it into another blog platform I keep getting error messages saying that the WordPress XML file is invalid.
How do I fix this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Where are you exporting to please?
If you opened the XML file and you did not do so in a plain text editor then you corrupted the file.
-
Exporting to Blogger. The issue is occurring long before the import into Blogger. It appears when I use the converter tool to convert the XML markup.
I did not open the file at all before loading into the converter.
Thanks

Hi there,
Could you send me a link to the blog you’re exporting? I checked your blog at http://vtestblogv.wordpress.com/ but it doesn’t look like you have any content there.
Also, what tool are you using to convert the XML file?
-
Hi Rachel. I’m exporting this blog actually:
http://www.scottiemom.comAnd I’m using this tool to convert it. I haven’t seen any other tools that can convert the XML markup.
http://wordpress2blogger.appspot.comI receive the following error when I try to convert the file:
“Error encountered during conversion.
Input WordPress document is not valid XML!!
Error appears around line 117401, column 92″And this is the error that is listed at the top of the XML file before uploading to the converter tool:
“This page contains the following errors:
error on line 118682 at column 93: xmlParseEntityRef: no name
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.”Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I just checked the export file for that blog, and I didn’t see any errors in the XML. I’d be happy to help you with this further, but first I’ll need to confirm that you’re the owner of that blog.
You can either log in to the account that owns the blog and reply here to confirm, or you can email us directly. Either way, once you’ve confirmed that you own the blog we can continue helping you with that export file. :)

This is my friend’s blog. I’m doing the transfer for her. I’ll have her drop you an email with her expressed permission for me to do so. Thanks.
-
That sounds great! If your friend includes a link to this forum thread or mentions your username in her email, that will help us connect her email to your request. (Or just let me know here once she sends the email, and I can check for it in our system.)

Hey all – Scottie Mom here. Vtestblogv has my permission to access ScottieMom.com to export content. Please let me know if you need anything else!
-
@thescottiemom – Thanks for confirming!
@vtestblogv – I just sent you an email (to the email address on your account) about this export — can you please check for that email? You can reply directly to that email with any questions, or please let me know if you don’t get it.

Hi Rachel, thank you for your email and quick responses.
The error message I’m getting now is this:
“We were unable to save your template.
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message:
There should be one and only one skin in the template, and we found: 0″Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi there,
Are you getting that error from the conversion tool at http://wordpress2blogger.appspot.com/ ? I tested out the export files in that converter and didn’t run into any issues, so I want to make sure I’m checking in the right place.
-
Sorry. No the error is popping up when it’s uploading to Blogger.
The converter worked for me as well.
Thanks Rachel.

Not sure if it helps, but I ran it through a markup validation service and here are the errors it came back with:
Unable to Determine Parse Mode!
The validator can process documents either as XML (for document types such as XHTML, SVG, etc.) or SGML (for HTML 4.01 and prior versions). For this document, the information available was not sufficient to determine the parsing mode unambiguously, because:
in Direct Input mode, no MIME Media Type is served to the validator
No known Document Type could be detected
No XML declaration (e.g <?xml version=”1.0″?>) could be found at the beginning of the document.
No XML namespace (e.g <html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” xml:lang=”en”>) could be found at the root of the document.
As a default, the validator is falling back to SGML mode. -
Thanks for letting me know. It looks like something is going wrong with the converter, in which case there’s not much I can do to help with that. The export file from WordPress.com doesn’t have any XML issues that I can see, so you’ll need to get in touch with the creators of that converter (or Blogger support) to try to resolve the issue with the file that the converter creates. Sorry I can’t do more to help!

Okay thanks for your time. I appreciate it.
One more thing…you gave me two xml files. Is that the entire blog split into two files or duplicate files?
Thanks,
-
Those two XML files are the entire blog split into two files (not duplicates). If you have any other questions or concerns about those WordPress.com export files, just let me know!

Sorry to bother you again Rachel. But can you tell me how you were able to export a valid XML?
Here are the instructions I’ve been following. Did you do something different to this?
Log in to your account.
Go to the Dashboard.
Click on Tools: Export
You’ll get some options here, so export all content.
Click on Download Export File.
