Transfering Existing WordPress Blogsite Contents to a Revised WordPress Blogsite

  • Unknown's avatar

When the Pandemic first got started I created a WordPress Blogsite titled: MabuhayUSVeterans and then later created a similar WordPress Blogsit titled: Mabuhay Expats which has been recently changed to read: Mabuhay Expats & Veterans, thus plannng on transferring everything from what I have wth MabuhayUSVeterans to Mabuhay Expats & (and) Veterans and from what I read, it seems that everything (to include tags) will be transferred to the newly updated wordpress blogsite. Yet, I am at a loss at to how this is accomplished. (NOTE: My primary reason for converting the two separate blogsites, is that much that I have posted on MabuhayUSVeterans also relates to the former WordPress Blogsite titled Mabuhay Expats and now is Mabuhay Expats and Veterans.)

So, whatever type of help that you might be able to provide, it will be very much appreciated.

    Respectfully,

I just published a new post on my WordPress.com Website (MabuhayExpats) and, I noticed that the tag words followed by commas aren’t posting. I tried several times and nothing happens. I did some research on this issue and it said on WordPress that you can have as many tags as you wish. I have had my WordPress Account up and running for several years and never did I ever experience what I have been trying to do in the past couple of days.

Can someone look into this for me? The title of my post is: What are You Really Looking for When Visiting an Expat Site?

    Thanking you ahead of time.

    Mabuhay Expats

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Are you able to confirm the URL of the website that you need assistance with please?

    Many thanks.

    Hello aleone89:

Sorry for being late with my response.

Here’s the post and URL that you were asking for: https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/2022/08/12/what-are-you-really-looking-for-when-visiting-an-expat-site/

  • Hi,

I’m able to add and remove tags from that post. Can you try one more time and use Enter after each tag instead of a comma?

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

You would need to first export all content from MabuhayUSVeterans and this would be done as per these steps here:

    Export Your Website’s Content

It would then need to be imported to Mabuhay Expats & Veterans as per these steps:

    Import a Website

I hope this helps so far.

    Hello aleone89!

I did as you instructed, exporting everything as an “xml document” (7,038,772 – unsure what this equates to) to a Winrar File. I then filed the “xml document” to a USB and, then imported (uploaded) everything to Mabuhay Expats & Veterans and received confirmation (Success! Your content has been imported.)

Thus, I appreciate your help very much!

Now, that I have finished importing everything from “MabuhayUSVeterans” is it safe to say, that I can delete this WordPress Website? IF so, can I possibly create a new WordPress Website (creating a new URL to conform to the “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” that is using a former URL that refers to “Mabuhay Expats”)?

If so, then I was thinking of performing that same ritual all over again exporting everything from Mabuhay Expats & Veterans to a new file that would have the same title and the same URL?

    Respectfully,

    Thanks for your response!

I can certainly try and will then get back with you, as to what I have learned at my end.

    @mabuhayusveterans:

I noticed you had created two different threads. To avoid duplication of work by Staff, I’ve merged the two threads together and will respond to you here:

    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/transfering-existing-wordpress-blogsite-contents-to-a-revised-wordpress-blogsite/?view=all

If you delete the site mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com that URL would no longer be available. If you want to use that URL again, Staff can empty your site of content so you can “start over”.

Otherwise, please review everything on the thread and advise if you still need help and specify what you’re still having trouble with.

    Thank you!

    Hello fstat!

Well, I noticed that I had entered duplicate words (removing them, so as to have just one), deleting numerous tag words (to cut down on what I had hoped would work), I tried it with entering the word “Enter” and again with commas and, still it doesn’t work at my end.

So, I don’t know what the problem is at my end here in the Philippines. Just when you think it’s going to work (as the “fan” that is turning after you click on “Publish” it almost seems like it’s going to work, only to review the post and, again no tag words appear. I even cut down on the amount of tag words, to see if that would work and, still nothing is posting.

Any other suggestions that you might have, will be very much appreciated, as the only other option I have is to delete the post (I always save a copy of what I have written as a Word Document) and, then can try to re-post the article once again, to see if that will work.

  • Hi there,

If I can ask, how many tags are you trying to add to https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/2022/08/12/what-are-you-really-looking-for-when-visiting-an-expat-site/ when you do that?

I noticed for example that another recent post you had over 165 tags added. You are trying to add a similar amount to your other post as well? What if you try to just add a few? Are you able to save when you limit yourself to maybe 5 tags as an experiment?

It will be helpful to know if you are able to save your post if you add just a few tags, thanks!

  • Hi again,

I forgot to ask, but is there a specific reason for adding so many tags to your posts? There is not really Search Engine Optimization (SEO) value in doing that since Google will usually ignore tags, and may in fact label you as a ‘spammer’ for having so manny tags.

For example, on our WordPress.com Reader (which also displays a feed of all blog posts on WordPress.com) we do not show posts with more than 15 categories or tags for similar reasons: https://wordpress.com/support/topics/#missing-posts

Apart from your issue with saving posts, if you are able we definitely recommend using fewer tags, the amount you are adding now may actually be hurting your site visibility.

    Thanks!

    Hello staff-heroponriki!

    Thanks for your response!

Yes, I initially created one WordPress.com Blogsite titled to read “Mabuhay U.S. Veterans” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/), which is information that I wrote and disseminated to Retired U.S. Veterans that are either currently residing here in the Philippines or are contemplating a permanent move to the Philippines.

Later, I created a second WordPress.com Blogsite titled to read “Mabuhay Expats” (which was just recently renamed this week to read “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” but it still has the same URL (https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/). Then late yesterday afternoon (my time here in the Philippines) I exported everythng from the “Mabuhay U.S. Veterans” WordPress Blogsite and successfully imported it to the “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” WordPress.com Blogsite. The reason for doing so, is that there is much information that relates to both WordPress.com Blogsites BUT, as mentioned the URL still shows: https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/

So, my thought was to delete the first (original) “Mabuhay U.S. Veterans” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/) now that everything has been imported and is retained in the second “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” WordPress.com Blogsite (https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/). I then plan to create an identical WordPress.com Blogsite with the same name “”Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” and create a new URL that will match / correspond with this site. Once accomplished, I then planned on returning to the former (recently updated “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” (from what it used to read as “Mabuhay Expats”), exporting once again, everything from this site and importing into the hopefully (new site) and, at that time, once everything has been accomplished, I would then delete the current “Mabuhay Expats & Veterans” (formerly read as “Mabuhay Expats” with the URL that it has been using all this time) as to me, a URL indicates what a site pertains to.

Thus, in my personal opinion, every Expat or Veteran that visits “Mabuhay Expats & (and) Veterans” (with a new URL that matches the title), they can review the 326-Posts that I have written and obtained from other sources “crediting those sources” so that instead of visiting countless websites for whomever is looking for whatever, will have everything to review on one site with multiple posts to review at their fingertips and help them decide as to whether they wish to use what I have provided from a personal perspective or seek information elsewhere. (NOTE: I have quite a few Expats and Veterans that contact me via email, stating that they are quite happy with what I created and others asking questions (which I am more than happy to additionally provide), as I like to stay busy. I also get messages / comments on my WordPress.com Sites too. Additionally, I have a Facebook Site that acts as a “Referral Page” of all the posts that I have posted (which is “connected” to the WordPress Blogsite).

If you may wonder who I am (other than my name indicated as “Philippine Paul”), I am a Retired U.S. Air Force Administrator and a Retired Civil Service Administrator (who likes writing informative articles (with occasional photos) for all to enjoy, that are contemplating making a semi-permanent or permanent move to the Philippines).

    Hello staff-totoro!

    Thanks for your response.

Well according to when I researched this issue on the internet (coming across a WordPress.com Website – https://www.wpbeginner.com/glossary/tag/#:~:text=By%20default%2C%20there%20is%20no,unless%20you%20can%20justify%20it.), it mentioned that there is no number of the amount of tags that you wish to attach to an article. Yet it did mention to have no more than 10-tags. However, some of my posts have very few Tag Words while other, (like you mentioned) have more. I try to keep my tags down but, sometimes they are like what you mentioned. With the current article that I am referring to, instead of using ALL the tags, I decided to “take a portion of the tags” (approximately 25) to see if they would post and, the issue still remains the same.

So, I just tried it again with 7-Tag Words and believe it or not, IT WORKED! So, I will now have to refine the number of Tag Words that I am using and I appreciate your responding back to me, with your suggestion and, we can consider this issue closed.

    Respectfully,

    Philippine Paul
    Mabuhay Expats & Veterans
Thus, as it currently stands now, I am thinking of unpublishing my article (as I keep copies of everything that I write in Word, so if there is anything that I need to reflect back upon, I can easily click on the article and review it and update it as needed). I also keep a list of all “Published Posts” by date posted and likewise a list of all “Tags” in Word as well.

    Hello staff-totoro!

In regards to my last statment, and I quote “Thus, as it currently stands now, I am thinking of unpublishing my article”, end of quote, now that this post has accepted the much fewer tag words than I had planned on using, the post will remain. I will try to keep my tag words down as you suggested.

    Once again, thanks for everything!

    Respectfully,

    Philippine Paul
    Mabuhay Expats and Veterans

P.S. I will keep this post open due to information that has been mentioned by staff-heroponriki, when she / he combined both questions together.

    Hello staff-heroponrik!

Going back over my notes and what you stated, since I backed up everything and exported / imported ALL the posts from “Mabuhay US Veterans” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/) to Mabuhay Expats & Veterans (https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/), just how do I go about closing out / deleting the “Mabuhay US Veterans WordPress.com Blogsite” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/)?

This morning, I did some research on this and haven’t been able to find “the magic button” to close out “Mabuhay US Veterans” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/). I did come across a former post that explained how to do this but, apparently there has been a change made from when this post was created several years ago and what I currently have.

So, what is the secret to deleting “Mabuhay US Veterans WordPress.com Blogsite” (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/)?

    Respectfully,

    Philippine Paul

    Hello fstat!

    Thanks for your response!

I followed your instuctions and the Mabuhay US Veterans WordPress.com Blogsite ( (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/) is now deleted. Please note, per instructions that I received from aleone89, the other day, I was successful in exporting all my posts from former the Mabuhay US Veterans WordPress.com Blogsite to my revised Mabuhay Expats & Veterans Blogsite (https://mabuhayexpats.wordpress.com/) yesterday and, everthing is there.

Thus, thanks again for all your help!

    Hello fstat!

I do have one last question. Since I shut down my former Mabuhay US Veterans Blogsite (https://mabuhayusveterans.wordpress.com/) which will be officially deleted in 30-days from the time I removed everything last month. How soon after, can I create a new Blogsite and will it use a new URL, as I am going to name my new WordPress.com Blogsite: Welcome U.S. Veterans to the Philippines?

    Yes it will.

You can create a new blogsite at any time, and this will have its own unique URL.

    I hope this helps.
