Transferring data from an old WordPress site

Hi! I have an old WordPress blog/website from my grad school class. It will be deleted by the school so I downloaded the XML file for it. When I tried to upload the data to my new site in an effort to preserve all of my work (it was a semester long website/blog I maintained), the data won’t show up. I don’t know what to do because I tried copying and pasting the site in that special little area where it was supposed to be ‘easy’ to transfer data. I also tried to upload the data to a blank website but the free version forces you to pick something to start. I noticed the theme I picked for my school page wasn’t available at all in the free WordPress templates. I just want all of my data to be displayed even if the template is different.

  • The only site I see under your account here is https://thelittlelibrariansays.wordpress.com and there was a successful import completed 3 weeks ago.

I see 10 posts from 2019 on the site. Do you see what you’re looking for at https://wordpress.com/posts ?

Hi, yes thank you so much! I am brand new to WordPress in the sense that I am totally lost when it comes to the interface. Now I don’t know how to get my posts visible on the new website. Nothing has been launched yet, but the first step was me trying to even find where my data was.

  • Right now you have a very limited theme, designed to just show a small bit of info, for things like profiles and such.

So, first step I’d say is to try a different theme: https://wordpress.com/themes

Next, make sure your front page is set to display posts, or that you have a page set for your posts: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/front-page/
