Last reviewed on November 14, 2025

You can cancel or remove subscriptions from your WordPress.com account, including plans, email, add-ons, and other purchases. For domain cancellations, see our guide to cancel & refund a domain. In this guide, you will learn how to cancel a subscription or remove it immediately.

Cancel a subscription

Canceling disables auto-renewal, ensuring you won’t be charged again. If eligible for a refund, your subscription will be removed immediately. Otherwise, you can use it until the expiry date. See the section about refunds below for more information.

To cancel a subscription, follow these steps:

  1. Hover over your profile at the top right, and select the “My WordPress.com account” button.
  2. On the left side, select the Purchases menu option.
The profile menu with a highlight around the "Purchases" section.
  1. Find the subscription you want to cancel and click it to access the Purchase Settings page.
An arrow pointing to the product name in the purchases page.
  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the purchase settings screen and click the “Cancel plan” option (or “Cancel subscription” for email, add-ons, and other purchases).
    • If you see “Remove” instead of “Cancel“, your subscription is already canceled and will not automatically renew.
The "Cancel plan" option at the bottom of the purchase settings screen.
  1. On the next screen, click the “Cancel subscription” button to cancel the subscription.
    • If you have a plugin-enabled site, you will see an additional warning about what will be lost. Consider downloading a backup of your site before proceeding. You must check the confirmation box before you can cancel the subscription.
  2. You’ll see your refund amount if eligible or your plan expiry date if not. See the section on refunds for details.
  3. To verify your cancellation, return to the Purchase Settings page. You’ll see “Remove” instead of “Cancel“, confirming that auto-renewal is off.

You will have an optional survey after you click the “Cancel subscription” button. You do not need to complete the survey to complete the cancellation process.

Remove a subscription immediately

Removing a subscription immediately forfeits any remaining time on the subscription and removes the features from your site. You will need to remove all subscriptions from your site if you plan to delete the site.

To remove a subscription immediately, follow these steps:

  1. Hover over your profile at the top right, and select the “My WordPress.com account” button.
  2. On the left side, select the Purchases menu option.
  3. Find the subscription you want to remove and click the product name to open the Purchase Settings page.
An arrow pointing to the product name in the purchases page.
  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the purchase settings screen and click the “Remove plan” option (or “Remove subscription” for email, add-ons, and other purchases).
The "Remove plan" option highlighted on the Plan subscription details page.
  1. On the next screen, confirm you wish to remove the subscription.
    • If you have a plugin-enabled site, you will see an additional warning about what will be lost. Consider downloading a backup of your site before proceeding. You must check the confirmation box before you can remove the plan.

After canceling or removing a plan

Your site will continue to work after your plan is removed or expires. Your posts, pages, and media files stay on your site. Your site reverts to a free site, which means some features will change based on the free site’s limitations. If you had a plugin-enabled plan, see what happens to plugin-enabled plans for details about plugin-created content.

Site address

Once your plan is removed or expires, your site uses the .wordpress.com site address. You can set the site to private if you may want to access the content again, export the content to use elsewhere, or delete the site entirely.

Audio & video

Your existing audio and video files will continue to work and remain embedded in your pages and posts. However, if your new plan doesn’t support audio or video uploads, you won’t be able to upload new files. You can upload new audio or video files by upgrading your plan.

Storage space

Your existing media files are safe and will not be deleted. Free sites include 1 GB of media storage (3 GB for sites created before March 31, 2022). If your media exceeds the available storage space, you won’t be able to upload new media until you upgrade your plan or free up space by deleting files.

What happens to plugin-enabled sites

Plugin-enabled plans include access to use plugins, third-party themes, and custom code. When you cancel or remove a plugin-enabled plan, these features will be removed.

When content is removed:

If you cancel a plan that is eligible for a refund or remove a plan immediately, plugins, themes, and custom code will be removed right away. If you cancel a plan outside the refund window, these features will be removed when your plan expires.

Before you cancel or remove a plugin-enabled plan:

Download a backup of your site to preserve any content created by plugins, custom code, or themes. Once removed, this content cannot be recovered.

What gets removed:

What gets preserved:

  • Your posts, pages, and media files will remain on your site.
  • WordPress.com themes and customizations.

Additional changes:

  • Your site returns to how it looked before installing the first plugin, theme, or custom code.
  • The site becomes private so you can review it before making it public again.

The process to remove these features from your site can take between 10 minutes and a few hours once the plan is removed. You’ll receive an email when the process is complete.

About refunds

If you’re canceling because you want a refund, eligibility depends on when you purchased your plan and other factors. Eligible refunds are processed automatically when you cancel.
