Create social images with the Social Image Generator

Last reviewed on June 15, 2026

The Social Image Generator automatically creates an image for your social media posts, combining your post’s title with a template design. This guide shows you how to turn it on, set your default template, and use the generated image when you share a post.

This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Business and Commerce plans. If you have a Business plan, make sure to activate it. For free sites and sites on the Personal and Premium plans, upgrade your plan to access this feature.

Turn on the Social Image Generator

Before you can use the Social Image Generator, turn it on in your site’s Jetpack Social settings. To turn the Social Image Generator on, follow these steps:

  1. From your site’s dashboard, navigate to Jetpack → Social.
  2. Make sure you have at least one social network connected.
  3. Toggle the setting next to “Enable Social Image Generator” to ON.

Once the Social Image Generator is on, your posts’ link previews use a generated image by default. You can change this for any individual post.

Set default social image settings

You can choose the default template and a fallback image that apply to all your posts. To set default social image settings, follow these steps:

  1. From your site’s dashboard, navigate to Jetpack → Social.
  2. Make sure the Social Image Generator is turned on.
  3. Click the “Change defaults” button.
  4. Select a default template and add a default image to use for all posts when a featured image isn’t present.
  5. Click the Save button to save your changes.

Use the social image template on a post

When you customize a post before sharing, you can select the generated image for that post’s link preview or attach it directly to the social post. To use the social image template on your post, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Posts in your site’s dashboard and create or edit a post.
  2. Click the green Jetpack icon at the top-right of the editor.
  3. Under Share to social media, click the “Preview and customize” button.
  4. In the Media section, click the Select button.
  5. Choose “Social image template” under LINK PREVIEW. The preview updates to show the generated image.

To share the generated image as an attachment instead of a link preview card, turn on the “Share as attachment” toggle that appears below the image.

Note: On a published post, the Preview and customize button reads Preview and share instead and lets you reshare the post.
