Create a post

Last reviewed on February 27, 2026

Posts are individual pieces of content on a blog. Often referred to as blog posts or blogs, each post makes up the whole of your blog. This guide will show you how to create and manage posts on your site.

Create a new post

To add a new post to your blog, take the following steps:

  1. Visit your dashboard.
  2. Click on Posts on the left side.
  3. Click on the “Add new post” button.
  4. Give your post a title by typing it in the box at the top that says, “Add title“.
  5. Start typing your post, or click on the + block inserter icon to add new content. Learn more about using the WordPress editor to create your post content.

You can also publish posts by email and by voice.

Publish your post

Once you have created your post, you can publish the post to share it with the world. To publish your new post, follow these steps:

  1. Create your post and add your content.
  2. Optionally, customize your post’s settings with a featured image, excerpt, and more.
  3. In the toolbar at the top of the editor, click the “Publish” button.
  4. Pre-publish checks will ask, “Are you ready to publish?” Double-check your settings before clicking “Publish” again to publish your post.

In the top right of the screen, above the post settings, you’ll find several options for your new post:

The right side of the editor toolbar with options to view settings and publish the page.

From left to right, these options are:

  • Save draft: Save the latest version of your draft page.
    • If this shows Saved instead, it means the latest version of your draft has been saved successfully.
  • Preview: See what your page will look like on desktop, mobile, and tablet screens.
    • Click Show template to turn on/off the template in the page editor.
    • Click Preview in new tab to see how the changes will look on the live site.
  • Jetpack Icon: Show or hide additional options provided by the Jetpack plugin:
    • Improve with AI: Check for mistakes and verify the tone of your post before publishing.
    • SEO: Customize the title and description of the page (eligible plans only.)
    • Shortlink: Copy a shortened URL of the page.
    • Share to social media: Connect social media accounts and set up automatic sharing.
    • Social Previews: See how the page will appear on Google and social media.
    • Likes and Sharing: Enable the Like button and social media sharing buttons.
  • Newsletter: View options related to notifying subscribers of your post via email.
  • Settings Icon: Show or hide the post settings.
  • Help Icon: Open the help center to search for guides or access support.
  • Publish: Publish the draft post to your website. For updates to an already-published post, the button will read “Save“.
  • Ellipses Menu (the three vertical dots): Open additional editor settings.

After you publish your post

A post is different from other content types (like pages) because several actions are triggered when you publish a new post on a public blog:

  • The post appears as the newest entry on your blog page.
  • The post appears in Reader feeds unless your site is private.
  • Your subscribers receive an email notification, unless you turned it off in the pre-publish checks above.
  • The post is shared to your social media profiles if you have connected them.

Create posts with the AI assistant

The AI assistant four-pointed star icon.

This section applies to sites created with the AI Website Builder (all paid plans) or sites that have enabled the AI assistant (Business and Commerce plans). Open the AI assistant by clicking the AI icon (a four-pointed star) at the bottom of the screen.

The AI assistant on WordPress.com can help throughout your entire blogging process. Here are some sample prompts you can copy and use to create posts:

  • “Give me 10 blog post ideas about sustainable living for beginners.”
  • “Create an outline for a post about working from home productivity tips.”
  • “Write a 500-word introduction to cryptocurrency for complete beginners.”
  • “Write a short announcement post about our spring sale (20% off all items, March 10–20).”
  • “Use the following bullet points to create a structured post with headings, then publish it in the ‘Productivity’ category.”

Create posts with AI agents

You can connect your site to AI agents like Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and more. Enable MCP tool access for AI agents.

You can use AI agents like Claude to create posts on your site. After enabling MCP tool access, try a prompt such as “draft a new post about TOPIC in my usual style.” Your AI agent will save the draft post on your site for you to review. You can then publish the post manually or by asking the AI agent to publish it now or at a future date.

I want to…

Once you have created a post, you can edit the post settings (featured image, publish status, etc.) and the content of the post at any time. Your subscribers will not be notified of the changes, but you can reshare the post to your social networks on eligible plans.
