Delete a template

Last reviewed on April 10, 2026

You can delete any template you created on your WordPress.com site. You cannot delete the default templates that came with your theme, but you can reset them to their original design instead.

Delete a custom template

To delete a single custom template, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Find the custom template you want to delete and click the ellipsis (three dots) at the top right of the template thumbnail.
  5. Click Delete in the menu.
  6. Click Delete in the confirmation window. Your custom template is now removed from your site.
Delete option behind ellipsis menu on the Manage templates screen.

If you are already editing a template, click the site logo at the top-left of your screen to open the sidebar. From there, click the ellipsis (three dots) next to the template name to find the Delete option.

Delete multiple custom templates

To delete several custom templates at once, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Select the custom templates you want to delete. To select templates individually, hover over a template thumbnail and click the checkbox that appears on it. To select all custom templates at once, click the checkbox in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
The bottom bar showing a checked selection box, the text "2 items selected," and the Reset option.
  1. In the bottom bar, click Delete. (If Delete does not appear, none of the selected templates are custom templates you created.)
  2. Click Delete in the confirmation window. The selected custom templates are now removed from your site.

Default templates can’t be deleted

WordPress.com does not allow you to delete the default templates that came with your theme. If you changed a default template and want to remove those changes, reset the template to return it to its original design. If you want a different template applied to a specific page or post, change the template that page or post uses.

You can delete any template you created yourself. To see which templates on your site are custom and which came with your theme, open the Site Editor and go to Templates. Templates you created show your name, and templates from your theme show the theme name:

A list of templates, showing the theme name next to theme templates and the site owner's name next to custom-made templates.
  • Reset a template: If you want to undo changes to a default template, reset it instead of deleting it.
  • Apply a template to a page: If you want a different template on a specific page or post, change which template it uses.
  • Create a template: If you need a new custom template for your site, create one from the Site Editor, the page editor, or by duplicating an existing template.
  • Edit a template: If you want to change a template’s layout rather than delete it, edit it instead.
  • Templates: For an overview of how templates work and the common types of templates on your site.
