Reset a template

Last reviewed on April 15, 2026

Resetting a template restores it to the original design that came with your theme and removes any customizations you made. You can reset one template at a time, reset all your customized templates at once, or reset a template you’re currently editing from the Command Palette. Resetting a template cannot be undone.

What resetting a template does

Resetting a template restores that single template to the original design that came with your theme. Any blocks, layouts, colors, or other edits you made to that template are removed.

Resetting a template does not:

  • Reset your theme or your site.
  • Affect your other templates (unless you use the bulk reset option.)
  • Change the content of your pages or posts.
  • Delete the template (to remove a custom template, delete it instead.)

Only templates you have customized can be reset. If you have not modified a template, the Reset option will not appear.

Reset a single template

To reset one template to its original design, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Find the template you want to reset and click the ellipsis (three dots) at the top right of the template thumbnail.
  5. Click Reset in the menu.
  6. Click Reset in the confirmation window. The template is now restored to its original design.

Reset all customized templates at once

To reset every template you have customized in a single action, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Select the templates you want to reset. To select templates individually, hover over a template thumbnail and click the checkbox that appears on it. To select every customized template at once, click the checkbox in the bar at the bottom of the screen.

  1. In the bottom bar, click Reset. (If Reset does not appear, none of the selected templates have customizations to reset.)
  2. Click Reset in the confirmation window. All your customized templates are now restored to their original designs.

Reset a template from the Command Palette

If you are editing a template and want to reset it without leaving the editor, you can reset it from the Command Palette. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Click the name of the template you want to reset, then click the editing area to open the editor.
  5. Press Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows to open the Command Palette. You can also click the template title at the top of the editor to open it.
  6. Type reset in the search field. If Reset template doesn’t appear in the results, there are no changes to reset on this template.
  7. Click Reset template.
  8. Click Save in the top-right of the editor. The template is now restored to its original design.

  • Apply a template to a page: If you want a different template applied to a specific page or post rather than undoing your changes, change which template that page uses.
  • Delete a template: If you want to remove a custom template you created (rather than reset a default template), delete it instead.
  • Edit a template: Resetting undoes all your customizations. If you only want to undo one specific change, use the revision history instead of resetting.
  • Create a template: If you need a new template rather than restoring an existing one, create one from the Site Editor, the page editor, or by duplicating an existing template.
