Fix content added to a template instead of a page

Last reviewed on April 10, 2026

If you have content in a template instead of a page, that content will appear on every page that uses the same template. In this guide, you will learn how to identify when this has happened, move the content to the correct page, and restore your template layout.

Confirm what happened

When you add blocks directly to a template, such as the Page template, your content appears on every page that uses that template.

To confirm where the content was added:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Choose the template you edited, such as Page or Single.
  5. Check if the content you added appears in the template layout.

Homepage exception

The only exception is the default homepage template, where content is intentionally added directly to the template. When your site shows your latest posts as the homepage (in Settings → Reading), WordPress loads the front page template from the theme. Since this page isn’t linked to a specific page in the Pages list, you edit the homepage content directly in the template.

If you create a homepage manually and assign it as the static homepage in Settings → Reading, that page uses the Page template. In this setup, add content in the page editor, not the template.

If you need to switch from a template-based homepage to a static page (for example, to use a translation plugin), see Create a custom homepage.

Copy content from the template

To move your content to the correct page:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor.
  3. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option.
  4. Choose the template you edited, such as Page or Single.
  5. Open List View to find and select multiple blocks if needed.
  6. Use the block toolbar or CMD + C (Mac) / CTRL + C (Windows) to copy the blocks. If your content is inside a Group block, copy the entire group to keep the layout intact.

Paste the content into the correct page

With the content you want to move now copied to your computer’s clipboard, you can paste it into the correct page:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Go to Pages in the left menu.
  3. Edit the page where the content should appear.
  4. Place your cursor in the editor and paste the blocks using CMD + V or CTRL + V.
  5. Adjust the blocks as needed.
  6. Click Save to save your changes.

Remove content from the template

After confirming that the content is now on the correct page:

  1. Return to Appearance → Editor.
  2. In the left sidebar, click the Templates option and open the same template again.
  3. Select and delete the content you previously added.
  4. Add the Content block to the template — this is a placeholder that controls where each page’s content appears.
  5. Click Save to update the template.

Reset the template if needed

If you are unsure what content originally belonged to the template or want to remove all edits at once, you can reset the template to restore it to the original design from your theme. Resetting removes all changes you made to the template, not just the content you added by mistake.

Prevent this issue in the future

Remember that templates are shared layouts, not individual content. To avoid editing templates by mistake:

  • Always go to Pages to edit content for a specific page.
  • Only edit templates when you want to change the layout used by multiple pages.
  • Use custom templates when you want a specific layout for one or more pages without affecting existing pages.
  • Look at the banner at the top of the editor or the block settings sidebar. If it says template, any changes you make will affect every page that uses that template:
The template is highlighted in the search box at the top of the editor and in the settings sidebar.
  • Edit a template: If you want to change the layout shared by multiple pages, edit the template itself.
  • Reset a template: If you want to undo all changes to a template at once, reset it to its original design.
  • Apply a template to a page: If you want a different layout for a specific page, change which template it uses.
